Notes on the EPL Relegation odds movement over the course of the season include:

  • April 22: Leicester’s 1-0 to Liverpool over the weekend has doomed the Foxes to the drop, a fate Ipswich can join them in next weekend. Most sportsbooks are no longer offering EPL Relegation odds, now that the Tractor Boys are fifteen points away from safety with only five games remaining.
  • April 9: Southampton are officially relegated! Last weekend’s 3-1 loss to Tottenham have doomed the Saints with a move back the Championship. Leicester City may be joining them after Matchday 32, should the Foxes lose to Brighton and Wolves beat Spurs at home.
  • February 28: Southampton is a foregone conclusion, but there may yet be an escape for either of Leicester (-2500) and Ipswich (-1000). It’s true, no team has ever escaped relegation after having just 17 after Matchweek 27. The one sliver of hope for either team is what’s keeping 4th Place Manchester City (+1000) on the board: that The Cityzens’ Fairplay penalties are so significant, they are immediately dropped to the Championship.
  • October 24: Four teams, Wolves, Southampton, Crystal Palace, and Ipswich currently remain without a win this season, but its 14th-place Leicester who at +100 remains among the bottom three in the current relegation odds.
  • August 13: Newly promoted Leicester (-250), Ipswich (-138), and Southampton (+110) all remain favorites for relegation with the start of the new EPL season just days away. Interestingly, some books are giving Manchester City relegation odds as short as +1000, with the threat of relegation hanging over City due to multiple alleged breaches of financial rules.
  • June 1: Despite winning the Championship last season, Leicester City have the dubious honor of being the favorite for relegation in 2024/25, with odds averaging at -212. Just behind is fellow promotee Ipswich Town (-127) and Everton (+150 ), who survived 2023/24 despite a point deduction.

2015-16Newcastle, Norwich, Aston Villa37, 34, 17
2014-15Hull, Burnley, QPR35, 33, 30

35 points is the approximate number a team needs to avoid the drop in the Premier League. However, all three teams relegated in 2023/24 missed that mark by a decent margin.

17th-place Nottingham also finished with just 32 points 2023/24, but did so only because of a four-point deduction due to a breach of sustainability rules.

The 26 points earned by Luton Town last season was the lowest total earned by the “best” relegated team since Queens Park Rangers’ 25 points in the 1978/79.

However, QPR’s distinction is far more dubious as First Division teams played 42 matches at the time, meaning QPR’s PPM was 0.60 compared to Luton’s 0.68.

Sheffield’s 16 points in 2023/24 was the worst result for a last-place team since Derby County’s 11 points during the 2007/28 season, when The Rams won just a single game.

Of the previous 30 newly promoted teams over the past 10 seasons, exactly half (15) of them have been immediately relegated back to the Championship.

Joining the EPL for the 2024/25 season are Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton.

Leicester City and Southampton are both returning to the Premier League after one-year stints in the Championship, while Ipswich Town is returning to the top flight for the first time since the 2001/02 season.

Leicester won the EFL title last year with a record of 31-4-11 and 97 points. Ipswich finished just behind with a record of 28-12-6 and 96 points.

Southampton wound up in fourth place with 87 points, but would go on to beat West Brom and Leeds in the EFL Playoffs to capture the third and final promotion spot.
