The 2024-25 NFL MVP race was a tightly contested one, as Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson put up very similar numbers and their respective teams saw plenty of regular season success as well. We even saw a running back make it into the top contenders during the later part of the season, as Saquon Barkley put together an historical season in his first year with the Eagles.
Josh Allen ended up winning the NFL MVP award for the 2024-25 NFL season, but he wasn’t always the favorite. Take a look back at the 2024 NFL MVP odds and see how they changed throughout the course of the season.
2024 NFL MVP Odds
We saw three different NFL MVP favorites during the 2024-25 season: (1) Patrick Mahomes was the favorite for the majority of the season; (2) Lamar Jackson had two brief stints as the favorite, with the first being one week long after Week 7 and the second being a two-week period from Weeks 9-10; and (3) Josh Allen finished the season on his third go of being the MVP favorite, as he took over following Buffalo’s Week 11 win over the Chiefs. Each of his first two stints only lasted one week apiece.
Josh Allen closed the season as the heavy 2024-25 NFL MVP favorite, and the sportsbooks were correct, as he was named the MVP at the NFL Honors. Though Allen was not always the favorite, he remained among the top contenders the entire season. The longest odds you could have gotten on Allen to win MVP were +862 (average), which came in the offseason following the Bills trading Stefon Diggs.
Here are some notes on the 2024-25 NFL MVP odds movement:
- [February 6] Josh Allen was named NFL MVP at the NFL Honors
- [December 17] A win over the Lions in Week 15 pushed Josh Allen’s MVP odds from -380 to -900.
- [December 10] In spite of losing to the Rams in Week 14, Josh Allen saw his NFL MVP odds improve from -210 to -380 after an incredible six-touchdown performance.
- [December 3] Following Buffalo’s dominant win over the 49ers in Week 13, which saw Josh Allen record a passing touchdown to himself, the Bills’ QB became an odds-on favorite to win NFL MVP. Allen’s odds improved from +155 to -210.
- [November 26] Saquon Barkley rushed for 255 yards in Week 12, and totaled 302 yards from scrimmage, while scoring two touchdowns. Barkley’s MVP odds were +5350 entering Week 12, but shortened all the way to +475, third-best at this time, at some sportsbooks after the big performance. His QB’s MVP odds dipped from +1700 to +4000 as Barkley takes center stage in the Eagles offensive resurgence.
- [November 18] After the Bills handed the Chiefs their first loss of the season in Week 11, Josh Allen came out as the NFL MVP favorite again, seeing his odds improve from +353 to +160. Jared Goff saw huge movement in his odds, as they went from +4000 to +700, which were third-best on the board following Week 11.
- [November 12] Another great performance in Week 10 saw Lamar Jackson become an odds-on favorite at some sportsbooks, but has distanced himself from the pack at all sportsbooks. Jackson is within 10 cents of even money at all betting apps. Jared Goff’s MVP odds went the other way after throwing five interceptions against the Texans. Goff was listed at +800 heading into Week 10, but came out at +4000.
- [November 5] Lamar Jackson carved up a Broncos defense in Week 9 that had been very good against the pass all season. The result was Jackson taking back over as the MVP favorite. Some sportsbooks listed Jackson and Josh Allen as co-favorites after Week 9, but DraftKings and BetMGM gave the nod to the Ravens QB.
- [October 29] After throwing for 283 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-10 win over the Seahawks in Week 8, Josh Allen has become the favorite to win NFL MVP again. The move may have been more about Lamar Jackson losing to the Browns, though. Jayden Daniels also saw major movement, going from +3000 to +1600 after taking down the Bears on a last-second Hail Mary.
- [October 22] Lamar Jackson exploded against the Bucs on Monday Night Football of Week 7, throwing for 281 yards and five touchdowns, while adding another 52 yards with his legs. The big performance was enough to make Jackson the NFL MVP favorite at this time.
- [October 8] Josh Allen saw his MVP odds worsen significantly, going from +317 to +800, after he (and his WRs) struggled in Week 5 against the Texans. Jayden Daniels, on the other hand, is not only the odds-on favorite to win NFL OROY, but moved into the top five MVP contenders after Week 5. Daniels’ odds improved from +3800 to +1100 after embarrassing a once proud Browns defense.
- [Septemer 30] Josh Allen’s time as the NFL MVP favorite only lasted one week, as his odds faded after the Bills were blown out on SNF of Week 4 by the Ravens. Patrick Mahomes took back over as the favorite, in spite of his favorite target, Rashee Rice, potentially being lost for the season. Sam Darnold saw his odds continue to improve, landing at +1300 after Week 4, making him a top five contender.
- [September 23] After three straight weeks of dominating on the field, Josh Allen has taken over as the NFL MVP favorite following a Week 3 blowout of the Jaguars. The other player who saw major odds movement after Week 3 was Sam Darnold. The Vikings QB was getting +8367 odds coming into the week, but is now as short as +2800.
- [September 9] Josh Allen did it all for the Bills in Week 1, throwing for 232 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 39 yards on the ground and another two touchdowns. His NFL MVP odds have shortened after the outstanding performance, and DraftKings was even calling him the co-favorite alongside Patrick Mahomes on Sunday night. Joe Burrow, on the other hand, saw his odds fade from +975 to +1500. Jordan Love, who is expected to miss between 3-6 weeks after spraining his MCL, went from +1400 odds to +10000.
- [August 27] As bettors have gotten a good look at Jim Harbaugh’s run-heavy philosophy in the preseason, Justin Herbert’s NFL MVP odds have suffered. Herbert, a perennial top contender for the award, went from +2100 to +3000 in the weeks leading up to the regular season.
- [April 3] After the Texans acquired WR Stefon Diggs, CJ Stroud saw his NFL MVP odds improve from +1200 to as short as +950. That same move resulted in Josh Allen’s odds fading slightly from +760 to +829.
- [March 11] In spite of the new home with some quality weapons around him, Kirk Cousins’ NFL MVP odds didn’t really move after signing with Atlanta today. He remains between +3500 and +4000 to win the award. The same goes for Russell Wilson after signing with the Steelers. He is a longshot between 100-1 and 150-1.
- [February 9] NFL MVP odds for the 2024-25 season opened before the previous season finished, and Patrick Mahomes has began the season as the MVP favorite. He just edged out Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, and Lamar Jackson. Some quarterbacks have opened with vastly different odds this season than they did last year. Here are a few examples: CJ Stroud at +1400 thsi year versus +15000 last year (understandable with him being a rookie, though), Deshaun Watson at +4500 versus +2650, Jared Goff at +2000 versus +4250, Jordan Love at +1200 versus +4000, and Russell Wilson at +10000 versus +4250.
