When it comes to Olympic women’s beach volleyball, two nations have dominated the podium. Brazil has won a record seven medals in the sport. The USA has won three of the six gold medals awarded since beach volleyball became an Olympic sport in 1996.
Expectations are that these traditional powers will again be in the medal hunt at the Tokyo Summer Games. The Brazilian tandem of Agatha Bednarzcuk and Eduarda “Duda” Santos Lisboa are the +380 gold-medal favorites in the Women’s Olympic Beach Volleyball odds.

The Olympic beach volleyball tournament gets underway on July 24 and continues through August 8.
Brazilians in Form
Agatha and Duda have posted podium finishes in five of seven tournaments so far this season. That includes a pair of victories. They are #1 in the FIVB world rankings. Yet they come to Tokyo as the third seed in the Olympic tournament.
At 38, Agatha is the veteran of this tandem. She won a silver medal in Rio paired with Barbara Seixas. Agatha and Duda became a team in 2017, the year after the Rio Summer Games.
Duda, 22, is the rising star of the sport. She’s won four World Tour events and reached 13 podiums. Duda was voted the FIVB Top Rookie in 2016. She won a gold medal at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics.
Agatha and Duda are a perfect 4-0 in matches against the other three teams in their pool.

Canadians Are World Champs
Canada has never won an Olympic medal in women’s beach volleyball. In fact, there’s never been a Canadian team that’s finished in the top four.
That should change in Tokyo. The Canadian tandem of Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Parades are the reigning world champions. They’re also the #1 seeds in the Olympic tourney.

Pavan has previous Olympic playing experience. Paired with Heather Bansley, they finished fifth at Rio.
Pavan and Humana-Parades own a 75-28 (72.82%) record during the Olympic qualifying period. That includes a 35-17 (67.31%) mark against teams with Olympic experience.
Americans Look to Get Back on Top
The USA’s three Olympics run of gold medals ended in Rio. The US tandem of April Ross and Kerri Walsh Jennings ended up with the bronze medal.
After the last Olympics, Ross endured an acrimonious split with Walsh Jennings. Ross found her new teammate Alix Klineman. The latter was making the transition from indoor volleyball.
Over the Olympic qualifying period, Ross and Klineman won more gold medals (five) than any other team. They earned victories in 70% of their matches against teams with Olympic experience.
Their average tournament finish is a remarkable 3.94. However, they haven’t won a gold medal since Doha in March. As well, they lost the World Championship final to Pavan and Humana-Parades.

Switzerland’s Joana Heidrich & Anouk Vergé-Dépré (+1200) are the reigning 2020 European champions. Both have been to the Olympics with different partners. They show just a 50% success rate against fellow Olympians, though.

Germany’s Laura Ludwig was the 2016 gold medalist with Kira Walkenhorst. She’s back with a new partner, Margareta Kozuch. Ludwig is also back from maternity leave. They’re at +1000.
The Brazilian tandem of Ana Patricia Ramos and Rebecca Silva (+1100) arrived in Tokyo on a roll. They won gold and silver in their last two events.
