The US Open is in full swing in Flushing Meadows with tight matches being played and crazy upsets having already shaken up the draw. Sixth seed Petra Kvitova beat follow Czech Denisa Allertova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
She is the third favorite to win the second quarter, but her US Open odds to win outright have worsened dramatically.
2019 Odds to Win Women’s Quarter 2
Player | Odds |
---|---|
Simona Halep | +125 |
Bianca Andreescu | +300 |
Petra Kvitova | +700 |

Andrea Petkovic | +4000 |
*Odds taken 8/28/19
Petra Kvitova entered the US Open as the sixth seed with average odds of +1800 to win the tournament, but after the draw, and despite her first round win, her odds have worsened to +3300.
Kvitova’s First Round
Petra Kvitova has been battling a forearm injury that forced her to miss Roland Garros and withdraw from Toronto. After a loss in Cincinnati, staying hopeful is what Kvitova needed to do.

She blew by her opponent, Denisa Allertova, in straight sets, advancing her onto the second round. In the second round, Kvitova will face off against former World No. 9 Andrea Petkovic.
Tough Quarter
Petra Kvitova sits behind Simona Halep with odds at +125, and Bianca Andreescu, who’s odds are +300. Kvitova’s odds aren’t that far behind with +700, but it’s a tough two to be behind. Both Halep and Andreescu don’t have terribly difficult matches ahead of them in the second round.

Andreescu beat her first round opponent, 17-year old Katie Volynets, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Simona Halep didn’t beat her opponent Nicole Gibbs in straight sets, but managed to defeat the American, and avoid her previous two years going one and done at the US Open.

Who will Win This Quarter?
It would be pretty easy to say that Simona Halep will win the second quarter, but she’s still not playing at her best, tennis wise. She admitted to being stressed before her first match of the tournament, and with the +125 odds so close to Andreescu’s +300, Bianca could also win the quarter. Bianca’s playing the best tennis of her young career, and people can tell.
Simona Halep is playing good tennis, not her best, but it’s other factors affecting her game. She was nervous before her round one matchup, which could give an upside to both Petra Kvitova and Bianca Andreescu to take the quarter and future matches.
“So I’m confident. I feel like my game, it’s there. I’m moving well. I just need a little bit of mental confidence. Now I’m trying to get it.” – Simona Halep
There won’t be much of a surprise if Kvitova makes it through the second round, but as it gets deeper into the tournament, the competition gets tougher, which could provide trouble to Petra and her chances of winning the tournament outright.
