Sabalenka Cruises to Quarters
The 24-year-old Belarussian’s opponents have gotten younger every round. But she still hasn’t lost a set heading into her quarterfinal with Sherif.
First, she exacted revenge on Romania’s Sorana Cirstea, who upset her in the quarterfinals in Miami. Then she took care of 21-year-old Colombian wild card Camila Osorio in two tight sets.
But Sabalenka saved her best tennis for her round-of-16 matchup against young Russian wild card Mirra Andreeva, who was just 15 when the tournament began and turned 16 last weekend.

Andreeva, who has mostly played junior events, played her first two pro events of the year in the two weeks leading up to Madrid. Both were at the $60,000 ITF level. And she won them both – the first out of the qualifying – and lopped more than 100 spots off her ranking to move into the top 200.
So she came into the tournament with the resulting 13-match winning streak, and then beat Canadian Leylah Fernandez, No. 13 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia and No. 17 Magda Linette to reach the fourth round. All without dropping a set.
And Sabalenka roasted her, 6-3, 6-1.
Perhaps there was some fatigue on the teenager’s part. But mostly it was just Sabalenka overpowering her.

Late-Bloomer Sherif on the Comeup Again
For Sherif (full name: Maiar Sherif Ahmed Abdelaziz) – who happens to share Sabalenka’s birthday but who is two years older – the rise to this level has been noteworthy. She first played Billie Jean King Cup for Egypt when she was 14, and has been training in Spain since she was 16.
She’s a rare player from the Middle East to actually break through. And that brings with it a lot of extra pressure and expectations. She secured sponsorship deals any top-20 player would be thrilled with before she even arrived in the top 100.
Sherif lost time, so to speak, as she played and studied at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. She graduated in 2018 with a degree in sports medicine.

But she began 2019 without a ranking.
Doing well at the WTA 125 and ITF levels got Sherif into the top 50, although she came into Madrid with a 7-10 WTA record on the season.
But in the last six months, she’s beaten two top-10 players on clay: Maria Sakkari in the final of her one Tour title in Parma, Italy last fall. And earlier this week, she took care of No. 5 seed Caroline Garcia in straight sets.
She also ran through Camila Giorgi, No. 30 seed Anhelina Kalinina and No. 24 seed Elise Mertens this week – all solid wins.
First Meeting to Be a Hard-Hitting Affair
Sherif is a tall, powerful, big hitter whose game is pretty straight ahead. Not much of the touch and feel or net approach about her.
She’s a great athlete and a good mover for her height.
In other words, all the things Sabalenka is. Except the world No. 2 does all those things a little better.
It makes for a booming match that in part will depend on the day Sabalenka is having.
Given that, if you’re feeling adventurous, it’s almost worth betting on the upset for your Sherif vs Sabalenka prediction.
