The American will enter the match as the favorite, but can Putintseva upset her?

Pegula Defeats Defending Champ
With a 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 win over Camila Giorgi, Pegula was able to extend her head-to-head to 6-2. It was just last year that Giorgi beat Pegula in the semifinals of this tournament, but the American got the best of her in this year’s third round.

The 28-year old has yet to secure a title this year, but has come close, going deep in quite a few tournaments. Could this be the tournament that gets her her first title of 2022? It’s very possible.
Putintseva Breezes Past Alison Riske
Putintseva has really gone under the radar this year. The Kazakh has struggled a bit, and hasn’t made much of a splash in any tournament, but she’s having herself quite the time here in Toronto.
After dropping the opening set of her first match against Canadian Katherine Sebov, Putintseva has been lights out. She caught a break in her round of 32 match, where Paula Badosa withdrew from the match in the second set with injury.
She then went head-to-head against Riske, where she defeated her easily, winning 6-3, 7-5.

Pegula vs Putintseva Pick
As the seventh seed, Pegula is now the highest seed left in the tournament. After making it to the semifinals last year, she hopes to do the same thing here, but she has to get through Putintseva. With -240 odds, it looks like she’ll be able to do that, but Putintseva will put up a fight.
The American has been fairly consistent, not getting too high or too low this week, allowing her to defeat her opponents. This could be a factor in this match, as we’ve seen Putintseva get a bit angry and inevitably that affects her game. She’s not as tight, and and make unnecessary unforced errors.
Both player are aggressive, that will rely on their serve and strong groundstrokes. The two like to play at the baseline and let their power do the talking. Because of that similar style, there’ll most likely be a lot of back and forth, which could lead to this being a longer match. Yes, Pegula will most likely come out on top, but for the best bet, look for it to go the distance.
