It’s a battle of a couple former World No.1’s as Medvedev and Djokovic go head-to-head on Friday. The two are set to take the court at 8am ET.

Unfortunately Medvedev is just playing to end his season on a winning note, as he won’t be making it out of the group stages after two losses. Djokovic, on the other hand has won both his matches this week and will continue onto the semifinals.

Medvedev Won’t Move On

It’s the end of the road for Medvedev, as he was unable to win one of his first two matches of the tournament. Both his matches were hard fought battles, that could’ve really gone either way. Unfortunately for Medvedev, they didn’t fall in his favor.

He started off his tournament against Andrey Rublev, where they both put up a fight, but ultimately ended up losing 7(9)-6(7), 3-6, 6(7)-7(9).

He then found himself in a must win situation if he wanted to move on in the tournament. His second opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas put up just as much of a fight as his previous opponent. Medvedev lost 3-6, 7(13)-6(11), 6(1)-7(7).

Having been eliminated from the tournament, Medvedev has less riding on this match, but would still like to end his season on a high note.

Djokovic Stays Undefeated

The 36-year old opened his tournament up against Tsitsipas, and defeated him in straight sets, winning 6-4, 7(7)-6(4).

He then went onto to take on Rublev. This was an impressive match for Djokovic, who really led the match from start to finish. A turning point in this was when Djokovic broke Rublev to win the first set. He then continued with his momentum into the second, and came out to a strong lead. He went onto win 6-4, 6-1, to secure his spot in the final four.

Second Meeting in 2022

This will be the second time Medvedev and Djokovic go head-to-head this year, but will be the twelfth career meeting between the two. Their first meeting came back in 2017, with their most recent happening in Kazakhstan earlier in October. Djokovic went onto to win that match when Medvedev retired during the match.

Djokovic currently holds the head-to-head edge with a 7-4 lead.

Medvedev had two extremely close games, that it really could’ve won. His opponent’s really just beat him by the smallest amount. Fatigue looked to come into play as the matches continued. It’s the end of the year and all these players are tired and beat up after long year of tennis.

Djokovic is Djokovic and playing next to perfect tennis. His first two matches were masterclass like showings. His serve and groundstrokes are strong and accurate. He continues to play at an extremely high level consistently.

The 36-year old will come out looking for the win in hopes to continue his momentum. Medvedev is more likely to give in, as the match goes on. Look for Djokovic to win the match in straight sets.
