Upset Queen Potapova Makes Her Biggest Semifinal
As well as Potapova has been playing this year, you wouldn’t have given much for her chances to make the weekend at the Stuttgart Open, where nine of the top 10 were originally entered and she was the last player directly into the main draw.
But after a week of upsets, she’s in.
The most recent was her quarterfinal victory over No. 4 seed Caroline Garcia.

The Frenchwoman left the court in the middle of the second set to have a taping over her abdominal muscles reapplied. She couldn’t keep up the level she displayed in the first set. And Potapova somehow went on to a three-set win.
Earlier Wins Over No. 6 Gauff, Martic Begin Stuttgart Roll
Potapova’s dismantling of No. 6 seed Coco Gauff in the second round had a lot to do with Gauff’s continued struggles with her forehand.
The young American made more than 50 unforced errors to essentially hand Potapova a 6-2, 6-3, win.
In her opening round, Potapova was must inches away from elimination before beating Petra Martic in a third-set tiebreak.

Sabalenka Beats Good Pal Badosa
Earlier Friday, Sabalenka came up against probably her best friend on the WTA Tour in Spain’s Paula Badosa.
It was by far the highest-quality match of the four quarterfinals played Friday, and Badosa certainly played close to her best level and had her chances.
But in the end, Sabalenka limited the spells of poor play, and came up with big serving when she needed to. The victory came as much down to her higher level of confidence compared to that of Badosa, who will drop outside the top 40 by going one round less than her 2022 semifinal in Stuttgart.
Meanwhile, Potapova will actually drop a spot from her current career high of No. 24, even if she makes the final.
But if she can win the tournament, she would move into the top 20.
Potapova vs Sabalenka History
The Russian and the Belarussian have never met before. But Potapova, who says she is good friends with Sabalenka, said she has been looking forward to this first meeting for a long time.
The Russian is a straightforward baseliner who hits the ball flat and hard. In that area, Sabalenka puts more spin on the ball. She also serves significantly better.
Anastasia Potapova has a message for Aryna Sabalenka:
"Aryna is my good friend, I think it's gonna be fun. I've been waiting for this match, I've really wanted to play against you Aryna I don't know if you're watching."

Potapova’s best hope is to keep it close, and hang around enough that when and if Sabalenka has a drop in form – which almost invariably happens – she can pounce on her opportunity .
If she does that well enough, she has a shot. But on tennis alone, she’s overmatched.
Potapova vs Sabalenka Prediction
Sabalenka predictions are always such a crapshoot in the sense that she is most often the favorite on paper. And then, it comes down to how well she manages things on the day.
This year, she’s been doing very well in that department, which makes her a safer bet.
She’s pretty good at jumping all over weaker serves, and Potapova’s, at its best, isn’t much better than average.
Getting an unseeded opponent in the semis, even in a draw this deep, is an opportunity not to be wasted when making your Potapova vs Sabalenka picks.
