New Look Davis Cup
The competition for the world cup of tennis has been reimagined for 2019. Eighteen countries have qualified for the finals, slated for November 18-24 at the Caja Magica in Madrid.

Those 18 nations have been divided into six three-country groups for round-robin competition. The six group winners and the next two best records will advance to the knockout phase of the competition.
All matches are best-of-three sets.
2019 Davis Cup Group A Odds
Country | Odds |
---|---|
France | -140 |
Serbia | +235 |
Japan | +800 |
This group should be hotly contested. The Serbs are led by World #2 Novak Djokovic but after him aren’t nearly as deep as the French.
France sends out four of the top-30 ranked players in Gael Monfils (#10), Lucas Pouille (#22), Benoit Paire (#24), and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (#29).

The French are tournament tough, with a Davis Cup win in 2017 and a loss in the final in 2018. They should take the group but the Serbs will be well-positioned to grab a wild card.
Pick: France (-140)
2019 Davis Cup Group B Odds
Country | Odds |
---|---|
Spain | +110 |
Russia | +125 |
Croatia | +400 |
The Croatians are defending champs and have played in two of the last three finals. But they’re in a group of death here.

Spain will pit two top-10 players in Nadal and #9 Roberto Batista Agut against the world’s hottest player in Daniil Medvedev (#4), the steady Karen Khachanov (#17) and Andrey Rublev (#23).
Take the Russians in an upset but expect the Spaniards to be a wild card entry to the knockout round.
Pick: Russia (+125)
2019 Davis Cup Group C Odds
Country | Odds |
---|---|
Germany | -120 |
Argentina | +100 |
Chile | +1400 |
Argentina always seems to play well in these team competitions. They won the Davis Cup in 2016 and were finalists in 2006, 2008 and 2011.
Veteran Diego Schwartzman gives them the slight edge over the Germans.
Pick: Argentina (+100)
2019 Davis Cup Group D Odds
Country | Odds |
---|---|
Australia | -250 |
Belgium | +200 |
Colombia | +1400 |
This might be the easiest group of all to call. The Aussies can draw upon Nick Kyrgios, John Millman and Alex De Minaur.

Belgium’s David Goffin is the only player from either of the other two nations in this group who’s ranked among the world’s top 50 players.
Pick: Australia (-250)
2019 Davis Cup Group E Odds
Country | Odds |
---|---|
Great Britain | -250 |
Kazakhstan | +400 |
Netherlands | +400 |
Andy Murray is with the Brits but after hip surgery, he’s not anywhere near the player who was once world #1.

Great Britain should still have enough talent to top this group but they won’t be around long in the knockout phase.
Pick: Great Britain (-250)
2019 Davis Cup Group F Odds
Country | Odds |
---|---|
United States | +125 |
Canada | +180 |
Italy | +225 |
Any of the three countries could win this group. The USA isn’t an overpowering squad. Canada is less so after Milos Raonic dropped out with a back injury.
Take the price and go with the Italians. Matteo Berrettini and Fabio Fognini have played as well this season as anyone participating in this group.
Pick: Italy (+225)
Don’t Bet Against France
Nadal, who’s earned a reputation for last-minute withdrawals, suggested he wasn’t certain about his Davis Cup participation following his loss to Alexander Zverev in the ATP Finals.
Davis Cup Winners 2014-18
Year | Outcome |
---|---|
2014 | Switzerland 3 France 1 |
2015 | Great Britain 3 Belgium 1 |
2016 | Argentina 3 Croatia 2 |
2017 | France 3 Belgium 2 |
2018 | Croatia 3 France 1 |
No country in this event enjoys both the recent success or depth that France does. The French have four of the top 29 singles players in the ATP rankings, and Australian Open doubles winner Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

They’ve made three final appearances in five years.
If Nadal isn’t with Spain, the French won’t be beaten.
Pick: France (+500)
