Sevilla Playing Tremendous Football
Julen Lopetegui’s side couldn’t be in better form heading into this massive Champions League clash. They’ve won nine straight matches and haven’t conceded one goal in seven games. Sevilla’s last defeat came on January 12th against league leaders Atletico Madrid.
The La Liga outfit also beat Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey Semifinals last week, heading into the second leg with a two-goal advantage. Although the UCL Group Stage was a couple of months back, Sevilla looked solid.

Their only defeat was at the hands of the Blues on Matchday five, losing 4-0. But, Lopetegui’s men are a much different team now and will be eager to play on home soil, where they’ve lost just three times.
Dortmund is not a familiar opponent for Sevilla, having only played them during the 2010/11 Europa League Group Stages, where the Spanish outfit won once and then drew 2-2. After winning Europe’s next best thing last term, Los Nervionenses are looking to get past the last 16 of the UCL for just the second time ever after losing to Bayern Munich in the 2017/18 Quarterfinals.
However, Sevilla has enjoyed boatloads of success against German oppositions. They’ve only lost once in 12 matches against Bundesliga oppositions in European competition with seven victories and four draws.

Talisman Youssef En-Nesyri is one to watch for this side, having already bagged 13 goals in La Liga this term. The Moroccan also netted four times in the group stages. Sevilla’s backline will need to continue to be sharp against a BVB attack that is full of excitement, led by Erling Haland.
Can Dortmund Break Out of Their Rut?
Three defeats in their last five Bundesliga outings is sure not where Dortmund wants to be heading into Spain against a very tough opponent. But, they will need to get their act together instantly for a vital first leg.
After losing to Lazio on Matchday one of the group stages, Edin Terzic’s squad bounced back with four wins and a draw to send them through to the Round of 16. This is their seventh appearance in the last eight seasons in the knockout portion of Europe, but they’ve failed to advance past this stage since 2016/17, where Dortmund eventually lost to Monaco in the Quarterfinals.
It was another disappointing performance on Saturday, where the Black and Yellows were held by 12th place Hoffenheim in a 2-2 draw. Just a week prior, BVB also lost to Freiburg. Their defending has been questionable this term, suffering numerous lopsided defeats including a 5-1 thrashing from newly-promoted Stuttgart, then a 4-2 loss to Borussia Monchengladbach.

At this point, a Europa League spot for next season is about the best they’re going to get. Dortmund is six points off fourth place Wolfsburg and although there are still lots of fixtures ahead, their form will need a drastic change in order to get back in the top four.
Knowing that Champions League football in 2021/22 might be out of the question, this should also give BVB more incentive to advance as far as humanly possible in this campaign. History isn’t on their side for this first leg though. Dortmund hasn’t won a Spanish soil in their last 10 matches while conceding at least twice in nine of those appearances.

Haland is firing on all cylinders, already scoring 15 goals this season. The Norwegian was also the joint top scorer in group play with six goals to his name. He could very well be the reason Dortmund get a result on Wednesday.
Sevilla vs Borussia Dortmund Key UCL Stats
4-1-1 (2nd in Group E) | Standing in UCL Group Stages | 4-1-1 (1st in Group F) |
9 | Goals Scored | 12 |
8 | Goals Conceded | 5 |
5-0-0 | Record in Last Five Matches | 1-1-3 |
Best Bet
All signs point to Sevilla grabbing an important victory on home turf in the first leg. However, I like the thought of Dortmund securing a draw here. Although the Germans haven’t been playing great lately, they will rise to the occasion in Spain. Both teams will get on the scoresheet, with the visitors scoring a crucial away goal.
Pick: Draw +235, Both Teams to Score -148
