The Netherlands put on a confusing display in the group stage. They controlled the proceedings against Poland, and emerged with a 2-1 comeback victory while retaining 65% of possession. That was followed by a nil-nil draw with France when the would-be winner from Xavi Simons was ruled out for offside. Romania had a horrendous run in the pre-tournament friendlies, drawing 0-0 at home as heavy favorites against both Liechtenstein and Bulgaria. But in competitive fixtures, the Tricolorii have been nothing short of exceptional over the last 18 months.
Romania won Group I in qualifying (6-4-0, 22 PTS, +11 GD), well ahead of Switzerland (17 PTS) and Israel (15 PTS). Their setback to Belgium in the second group-stage game was their first loss in a competitive match since June 14, 2022, a run of 13 straight games unbeaten.

I haven’t been impressed with the Netherlands so far. The talent is obvious at times, and Van Dijk and De Vrij represent arguably the most intimidating center back combination in the tournament, if not the world. But the midfield play has left a lot to be desired, and it’s an area where coach Ronald Koeman doesn’t have his full complement of players.
Romania wasn’t overwhelmed by a very good Swiss team in qualifying, and won’t be overmatched against the Dutch on Tuesday.
