We are only two matches away from the 2022 Europa League Final at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium. Rangers vs RB Leipzig on Thursday afternoon will decide half of that potentially illustrious end of season clash. Currently, RB Leipzig can see the light at the end of the tunnel to Seville thanks to a 1-0 victory at home in the first leg.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side presented a defensive strategy to RB Leipzig and they nearly left unscathed. Despite giving up nearly 70% possession and only mustering up 0.2 expected goals, Rangers were in the match until the bitter end.
Nonetheless, it cannot always be that easy. RB Leipzig grabbed a late goal thanks to a wonder strike from Angeliño and go into the second leg with a breath of comfort.

The second leg moneyline sides with Die Rotten Bullen with favorable odds of -106. Moreover, Domenico Tedesco’s side also has the best Europa League odds at -138.

Over/Under and Spread
Additionally, goals are to be expected in this second leg tie. In fact, the odds on over 2.5 total goals sit at -115.
It should be noted that across their 26 combined European fixtures this season, the over/under on 2.5 total goals has been right down the middle, at 50% either way. However, in a second leg environment at the Ibrox, with the home side trailing, it is hard to foresee a match as tame as the reverse fixture.
Finally, there is some good value in Rangers covering the +0.5 spread with odds of -117.
Rangers vs RB Leipzig Prediction
To expand on this, let us just take a look at Rangers’ quarterfinal round. Similarly, they lost 1-0 away from home to arguably the better opponent on paper in Braga. Furthermore, they once again put together a sub-one expected goal tally with no shots on target.
Rangers vs RB Leipzig European Competition Statistics
1.33 | Goals per game | 2.18 |
1.55 | Expected goals per game | 1.97 |
0.93 | Goals allowed per game | 1.64 |
1.13 | Expected goals allowed per game | 1.50 |
47.4% | Possession % | 53.0% |
80.2% | Passing Accuracy % | 82.2% |
11.7 | Shots per game | 14.6 |
Regardless, in the second leg, a switch flipped and they were utterly top class. Not only did they win the game 3-1 to advance, they also put together 6.1 expected goals, 30 shots and 68% possession.
For me, this is the perfect example as to why this match will not be cut and dry for RB Leipzig. Rangers have a clear plan on how they see this tie playing out. In many ways, compare this to how Unai Emery and Villarreal approached Liverpool, calculated and composed.

Tedesco Fighting on Multiple Fronts
Oppositely, RB Leipzig come into this match knowing they are playing on a slippery slope. They are playing a dangerous side that has nothing to lose at a stadium that fears nobody.

Of course, they have loads of playmakers with the likes of Nkunku, Silva and Adams. In all honesty, I have run out of great adjectives to use for Nkunku this season. His 47 goal involvements do the talking for him and it is no surprise his name is being flaunted at the most prestigious of clubs.
But, RB Leipzig still have to fight on multiple fronts, which is concerning to me. Now, Rangers also have a cup final, but they do not really need to sweat a top four race as the title is nearly out of their hands. RB Leipzig has lost two in a row in the Bundesliga which raises some glaring questions during the run-in.
🗣️ Domenico Tedesco: "Congratulations to Gladbach on the deserved win. We weren't at the races in the first half and didn't have any of the things that you need for a game like this. We're giving out too many gifts at an important stage of the season."
