Monaco and Lille are giants of French football but their meeting on Friday is an unexpected mid-table clash. Monaco vs Lille kicks off at 3:00 pm EST Friday.

It has been a disappointing campaign for both teams as Monaco sits in 11th place – with reigning champions Lille in 12th spot in the Ligue 1 standings.

However, the picture is not completely bleak. The table is tightly congested and with 18 points, Monaco is only six points behind second-placed Lens.

Lille, furthermore, has failed to win in its last four league matches while Monaco has won only once over the same course of fixtures.

Additionally, Lille is priced at +260 with the draw looking the best prospect here at a generous +235.

Last season, Monaco was a challenger for Lille in the title race. But the increased workload of European football seems to have harmed both sides domestically.

At least, though, Monaco can take confidence from some good home form recently.

It has won its last three league fixtures at the Stade Louis II and is also unbeaten in two Europa League games at its base in the mega-wealthy Mediterranean principality.

Moreover, it hit three goals each time in those defeats of St. Etienne, Bordeaux and Montpellier – while conceding only twice across that stretch of games.

Indeed, Monaco sits on top of its Europa League group after two wins and two draws in the competition; although, therefore, that effort has taken its toll on the team’s league form.

There is, however, a worrying lack of goals at present.

The Monegasque side has failed to find the net in its last three outings.

Monaco has failed to score in 46 percent of its league fixtures so far.

There was a 2-0 defeat at Brest followed by a 0-0 draw at Reims in the most recent two league games. And there was, additionally, a 0-0 draw at home against PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League.

That adds up to 298 minutes of play without a goal.

Indeed, the side has failed to score in 46 percent of its league fixtures so far.

However, its leading scorer, the striker Wissam Ben Yedder, found the net four times in that run of three home wins so he is likely to be a key figure this time around, too.

The team has, however, shown its capabilities in the Champions League with the most recent result an impressive 2-1 win at Sevilla. Indeed, Lille sits second in its group after one win, two draws and only one defeat.

These teams drew 0-0 in their most recent meeting in Monaco last March.

That came following a 2-1 win for Lille in northern France last December.

Those absences could open the door for Lille to improve their away form.

So, in conclusion, it may be that recent performances suggest that Monaco may be too strong at home.

Lille, however, is desperate for good news league-wise and could well grind out a draw here.
