MLS Predictions Week 6

The CONCACAF Champions League continues next week with the first leg of the quarterfinals. So keep in mind that Philadelphia who plays on Tuesday, plus Vancouver and LAFC who play eachother on Wednesday, could rest some players.

We touched on the teams that have yet to lose this season earlier, but at the other end of the table, four teams, all in the West, have yet to win. They include Vancouver, the LA Galaxy, Sporting KC and Colorado. Let’s get rolling with this week’s best bets.

Chicago Fire vs DC United Prediction

Neither team is in a playoff position after five weeks of the season, but both have been scoring and conceding goals. Chicago’s games have been 1-1, 1-0 (L), 3-3 and 3-2 (W). DC’s have been 3-2 (W), 2-0 (L), 1-1, 3-2 (L) and 2-1 (L).

That puts both among the teams with the highest goals per game in their matches so far with Chicago’s 3.5 ranking fourth and DC’s 3.4 ranking fifth.

While Chicago’s expected goals against (xGA) ranks in the middle of the East at 5.6, DC is dead-last in the conference at 7.6 (alongside Montreal) and tied for 26th overall in the league. Only seven teams have allowed more shots on target through five weeks than DC as well. No team has allowed more goals than DC’s ten, and only Portland has conceded a similar amount.

So it’s hard to see DC going into Chicago and at least not conceding. Matches away to the Fire have not usually resulted in much success for United. They’ve failed to win any of their past eight trips to the Windy City, not winning since June 2015. That’s their only win in Chicago over the past ten years.

All that said, DC has five different scorers already this season with Christian Benteke leading the way with three goals. Fire games have seen wild swings of late in the past two weeks and no lead looks safe for Ezra Hendrickson’s side. The Fire coughed up a 3-1 lead late against FC Cincinnati to draw 3-3 two weeks ago. Then last week, despite winning 3-2 with a stoppage time goal, they also coughed up a 2-0 lead to Miami to be level 2-2 until the 92′ minute.

I see goals in this one. Maybe a few (BTTS & O2.5) but at least one from each side.

  • Chicago Fire vs DC United Prediction: Both Teams to Score (-130), risk 1 unit at Caesars Sportsbook

FC Cincinnati vs Inter Miami CF Prediction

Miami got off to a strong start to their 2023 campaign. But both of those wins came at home. One was over what looks to be a poor CF Montreal side and another to a strong Philly team, albeit one distracted by the CCL. They also came with team captain Gregore patrolling the midfield. Miami hit the road in Week 3, Gregore left injured and the Herons have collected zero points since. They lost 1-0 to NYCFC in Week 3, 2-0 in Toronto in Week 4 and returned home last week, but still lost 3-2 to Chicago.

FCC are ninth in shots, fifth in shots on target and ninth in xG in MLS. Only once this season have they failed to score; Week 2 away in Orlando. They’ve already managed to take three points from some of the league’s tougher sides in Seattle and Nashville, while keeping their goals allowed to just four, something they had struggled with in seasons past.

Cincinnati won at home 3-1 when these teams met last season, while they drew 4-4 in Miami .

The Herson have notoriously struggled away from home. They have just three wins (3-3-11) in their past 17 road games. Those came against the likes of Toronto, DC and San Jose last season—all some of 2022’s weakest teams.

Cincinnati has been one of the league’s hottest teams for some time now, which is why they are among the favorites in the MLS Cup odds. Going back into last season they’ve lost just twice in their past 20 MLS games and one came on the road to MLS Cup finalists Philadelphia.

They’ve also turned TQL Stadium into somewhat of a fortress of late being 6-6-1 (WDL) in their past 13 home games. The odds for this game have been shifting in Cincinnati’s favor this week from -150 to up to -185 at some books. You can still grab FCC at -167 at Bet365. MLS Week 6 Parlay Picks

Here’s a two-teamer for this weekend as part of your MLS predictions.

Colorado Rapids vs LAFC Prediction

The only reason to not look the way of LAFC here is if they elect to rest some starters for their upcoming CCL match. But even still, that match isn’t until Wednesday. LAFC are still undefeated at 3-1-0 and have only conceded three goals in four games, while scoring 11.

In Seattle two weeks ago they drew 0-0. Last week they scored early three minutes in against FC Dallas, played much of the game up a man after an FCD red card, conceded an equalizer in the 73′, missed a PK in the 79′ and then Denis Bouanga who had just returned from international duty scored the winner in the 84′ after only subbing on in the 65′.

Now they travel to a still winless Colorado team (0-2-3) who’s only scored twice on the season. One of those goals came late into last week’s game in Austin in the 85′ minute against a Verde team missing key defenders.

Home teams have won each of the past six and seven of the eight all-time meetings between these sides but this Rapids team doesn’t look to have the firepower needed to hand LAFC their first defeat of the season.

We’ll back the double chance in our MLS predictions for a win or draw with LAFC.

LA Galaxy vs Seattle Sounders Prediction

Let’s go to another game involving a Los Angeles team. The LA Galaxy (0-3-1) will be hosting the Seattle Sounders (3-1-1). The Galaxy have yet to win a game this season, while Seattle has just one defeat and has conceded just twice in five games.

Both teams were missing key players last week. LA played to a 0-0 draw in Portland, their third straight draw. The Sounders went into Kansas City and despite falling behind early just five minutes into play, Leo Chu had four assists and Jordan Morris had four goals and Seattle went on to route SKC 4-1.

The Galaxy have zero wins, two goals scored and rank 25th in xG at just 4.7. Their 17 shots on target rank in the bottom third of the league and only one team has created fewer goal creating actions than LA’s four.

Dejan Jovelic should be back from international duty but Chicharito is likely still out injured. Ricky Puig still has zero goals or assists through four games and I just don’t see how the Galaxy will have enough to get all three points against this in-form Sounders team. It’s something they haven’t done in any of their past nine meetings with Seattle (0-4-5) and only once in their past 16. However, LA also hasn’t lost at home in their past eight games. And, Seattle has just four road wins in their last 27 away games.

Let’s back the double chance on the Sounders (win or draw) to go with the double chance on LAFC in this MLS parlay.

  • MLS Parlay Picks: Seattle double chance & LAFC double chance (+131); risk 1 unit at Bet365

Season Record: Last week was 0-3, leaving us at 5-12, -7.65 units.
