It suffered a 3-0 defeat against Bayern Munich in the 2019 final. Following that, it was beaten again in the final of 2020 – going down by 4-1 against Borussia Dortmund.

Leipzig has become one of the most powerful forces in German football. But this match offers it the chance to stamp that prominence into the record books for the first time.

It overcame Union Berlin 2-1 in the semifinal at home last month.

Previously, it had progressed past smaller outfits Sandhausen, Babelsberg, Hansa Rostock, and Hannover 96.

In the semifinal, Reibrg got past Hamburger SV – a big club but currently in Bundesliga.2 – with a 3-1 away win.
