Canada’s Fine Win Over Panama
Canada’s chances of qualifying for their first World Cup finals since 1986 were boosted massively after an outstanding 4-1 home win over Panama in October.
Not only did that win see them leapfrog their opponents in the table and take the third automatic qualifying spot, it crucially saw them increase their goal difference to +6; the second-best in the mini-league. They are now just four points behind leaders Mexico.

In addition to the Canadians showing their prowess in front of goal in the Panama game, they also showed a steely side after having gone a goal down early on. Despite this setback, they kept their heads and were level before half-time through an own-goal from Michael Murillo. Second-half strikes from Alphonso Davies, Tajon Buchanan and Jonathan David were, in the end, more than enough to earn all three points.
Canada Unbeaten at Home in 21
The win over Panama was all the more impressive as it was achieved without the services of Cyle Larin – currently the top goalscorer in CONCACAF qualifying with nine goals – but he is expected to be back for the Costa Rica game. Worth noting too is John Herdman’s side’s good current run of form – unbeaten in each of their last six World Cup qualifiers.

Canada is one of only two CONCACAF teams who are currently unbeaten – Mexico being the other – and also have a good record against Costa Rica, with just one defeat in their last seven meetings. Their home form too is exceptional as they have not lost any of their last 21 – a record dating back to March 2016.

Steady but Unspectacular Start for Costa Rica
Costa Rica made a steady start to qualifying, claiming five points from their games against Jamaica, Honduras and El Salvador, but suffered their first away defeat in October when they were beaten 2-1 by the USA in Columbus.
It all started so well for Los Ticos when they took a first-minute lead through Keysher Fuller, but the USA equalized on 25 minutes through Sergino Dest before an own goal on 66 minutes from Leonel Moreira secured the points, leaving the Costa Ricans with a 1-3-2 record and plenty of work left to do to get in the qualification places.

Qualification Still Possible
Luis Fernando Suarez’s men will still believe a qualification place is possible though, even if it means taking the play-off route that a fourth-place finish would earn them. They are currently just two points behind fourth-placed Panama and four points behind Canada. A win here for the Costa Ricans would throw it wide open.
They do however need to find some consistency if they are to qualify for their third successive World Cup. An indifferent run of form has seen them win only once in their last eight in all competitions, drawing a blank in five of them, and they have also failed to win any of their last three games against Canada. They, therefore, have several hurdles to overcome if they are to get a good result in Edmonton.
📰 En la dinámica de una Selección el tiempo es un recurso escaso y valioso, por lo cual el microciclo de la semana anterior fue un importante espacio para que el cuerpo técnico de #LaSele.

Canada vs Costa Rica Prediction
While Canada starts this game as big odds-on favorites, the stats suggest this will be closer than many are expecting. In each of the last eight meetings, neither team has scored more than twice and there have been two wins each and four draws.
While form is on the side of the hosts, the Costa Ricans have a huge incentive to get something and have enough quality players in their ranks to make it happen. They do however desperately need to find the good version of themselves, something that has been tough of late, and for that reason I see Canada getting over the line first by the odd goal.
Pick: Canada to win (-245) / Canada to win 2-1 (+900)
