Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund Preview
It has been a turbulent few weeks for the German champions with Thomas Tuchel being appointed as head coach during the international break after the Bayern board called time on the tenure of Julian Nagelsmann. There would be no better way for the Tuchel era to begin than with a victory over their biggest rivals that would take them back to the top of the table.
Defeat away at Bayer Leverkusen in the final game before the break was the final straw for the Bayern hierarchy, who had watched the team perform below their usual high standards while their coach became embroiled in some off-field controversy.

Season Still Very Much Alive for Bayern
Defeat in Leverkusen came via two second-half Exequiel Palacicios penalties after Bayern had taken a first-half lead through Joshua Kimmich. With BVB winning 24 hours earlier and going to the top of the table in the process, it could prove a pivotal weekend in the Bundesliga title race.
However, the season is very much still alive for the Bavarians with a UEFA Champions League quarterfinal with Manchester City approaching, along with a DFB-Pokal quarterfinal against SC Freiburg. When Bayern played BVB in Dortmund in October in the first Der Klassiker of the season it ended 2-2.
BVB on a Title Charge
Prior to the World Cup/winter break, BVB’s season meandered along, with an 8-1-6 record from their 15 games, but upon its resumption in mid-January, they have exploded into life. Since then, Edin Terzic’s men have drawn just one Bundesliga game and won all others, including, most notably, wins over fourth-placed Freiburg, and fifth-placed RB Leipzig.
So impressive has their form been, they have scored 30 goals in their 10 league games in 2023 and taken themselves to the top of the table. What looked like a two-way battle between Bayern and Union Berlin, has now turned into one between Bayern and BVB – a throwback to the Bundesliga’s biggest rivalry of the 21st century

Champions League Exit for Dortmund
Like Bayern, BVB have an upcoming DFB-Pokal quarterfinal, when they play RB Leipzig away next Wednesday, but no longer have an involvement in the Champions League after being knocked out by Chelsea over two legs in the round-of-16.
They warmed up perfectly for this massive game with an emphatic 6-1 win over FC Koln in the last game before the international break, which significantly included a brace from Sebastien Haller, who has made an impressive recovery from a testicular cancer diagnosis.

Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund Prediction
Bayern will be hoping for some ‘new manager bounce’ upon Tuchel’s arrival and this is perfectly set up for him to take them back to the top of the table in his first game. It will be far from straightforward though against a BVB team that has forgotten how to lose.
While the home win is the obvious bet, there are plenty of reasons to believe that the visitors can at least claim a point. For me, there is value here in betting on the low-scoring draw.
