Australia vs Denmark Preview
Australia has managed to live up to expectations thus far despite the absence of star striker Sam Kerr, who has been nursing an injury. She was actually in line to feature against Canada but was held out for another game. The Chelsea standout should be on the pitch Monday in some capacity, which is huge.
The Aussies began their tournament with a 1-0 win over Ireland before succumbing to a shocking 3-2 defeat to Nigeria on matchday two. But with their backs up against the wall against the Canadians earlier in the week, they delivered.
Hayley Raso was the star of the show versus the Olympic winners, bagging a first-half brace to put her side in complete control. Mary Fowler scored a third early in the second period before Stephanie Catley converted from the spot in injury time.

Without a doubt, last Monday was their best performance of the tournament thus far and easily their most clinical, hitting the back of the net four times on just six total attempts on target. The Matildas will have all the support in the Round of 16 and will be hoping to replicate their 3-1 friendly win over Denmark in 2022.

Denmark landed in a rather manageable group with England, China, and Haiti. While the Brits were certainly expected to finish in first, the Danes were also expected to progress. Needless to say, they did.
Making their first appearance in the Women’s World Cup in 16 years, Denmark notched a slim victory over China in the tournament opener before losing 1-0 to England on matchday two. But, Lars Sondergaard’s group produced the goods when it mattered against the Haitians.

Captain and all-time leading scorer Pernille Harder put her club ahead in the 21st minute from the penalty spot. Denmark later added another late in injury time in the second half to secure their place in the knockout rounds for the first time ever.
While a mere three goals in as many appearances isn’t great for the Danes, they should feel confident in their ability to get past a strong Aussie squad, beating them in another friendly two years ago.
Projected XIs & Injuries
Australia Projected Starting XI: Arnold; Carpenter, Hunt, Kennedy, Catley; Raso, Gorry, Cooney-Cross, Foord; Van Egmond, Fowler
Injuries & Absences: N/A
Denmark Projected Starting XI: Christensen; Sevecke, Pedersen, Boye, Veje; Hasbo, Holmgaard, Kuhl; Thomsen, Madsen, Harder
Injuries & Absences: N/A
Given how impressive Australia looked vs Canada, there’s a good chance they go with the exact same starting XI here. However, you can certainly count on Kerr coming on at some point. As for the Danes, not many changes are expected, with Harder leading the way up top.
Australia vs Denmark Prediction
This should be a thrilling encounter. I do have to take Australia though because not only do they have home advantage, but the Matildas have a ton of momentum after having their way with a historically solid Canadian side.
