Hamilton Nearly Unbeatable in Spain
After seeing Max Verstappen storm to victory at last month’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, speculation among F1 observers quickly heated up as to whether a changing of the guard was at hand. But after finishing a distant second to the Red Bull Racing star in Imola, Lewis Hamilton quickly returned to his position atop the podium last weekend in Portugal with a decisive performance and will be looking to extend his lead atop the F1 Drivers Standings this weekend with a seventh career victory in the Spanish Grand Prix.

Hamilton’s dominance in Barcelona has not been limited to regularly taking home the checkered flag. The Mercedes superstar has also started from the pole in four of the past five editions of this race and padded his point total by recording the fastest lap in three of his past six appearances.
Doubts Linger Over Mercedes’ Ability to Keep Pace
Despite that spectacular track record, neither Hamilton nor his Mercedes teammate Valtteri are close to assured of another victory in Barcelona this weekend. Indeed, reports have indicated that concerns are increasing among the Mercedes brain trust as to the German automaker’s ability to keep pace with Red Bull at the Spanish Grand Prix. The long straightaways on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya are ideally suited to Red Bull’s vehicle this time around, as is the weather forecast for Sunday, which is calling for considerably warmer conditions than last week in Portugal.

Those circumstances add particular appeal to Sergio Perez’ odds heading into the weekend. “Checo” is coming off his best performance since joining Red Bull this season, briefly holding the lead in Portugal before settling for a fourth-place finish.

The 31-year-old Mexican also sports a respectable track record in Barcelona. He has finished among the top five in two of his past four appearances, with his career-best fourth-place performance in 2017 coming after qualifying a distant eighth. With his increasing comfort at the wheel of his Red Bull ride, Perez offers steadily increasing betting value as a +155 bet to reach the podium this weekend.

Vettel Poised for Breakthrough with Aston Martin
The front of the pack is once again expected to be dominated by Mercedes and Red Bull. However, betting value can still be found further down the Spanish Grand Prix odds. Sebastian Vettel has endured a difficult debut at Aston Martin, finishing no better than 13th through the first three rounds of the season. However, the four-time F1 champion, who replaced Perez on the UK-based team during the offseason, will reportedly be receiving important aero updates to his car in time for this weekend.

Vettel has enjoyed a successful run in Barcelona, where he has finished among the top five on 10 occasions since 2009, including his win in 2011. With an improved ride, and boosted confidence in the wake of a solid qualifying performance in Portugal, look for a breakthrough from the 33-year-old German this time around. In addition to the solid value found in the +120 odds of him finishing in the points, Vettel is an intriguing +1000 bet to crack the top six this weekend in Barcelona.
The Picks: Max Verstappen to win (+140); Sergio Perez top three (+155); Sebastian Vettel top ten (+120)
