Favorites to Watch
Among the top five favorites in 100 meter hurdles, Puerto Rico’s Jasmine Camacho-Quinn (-105) is the early frontrunner, followed by USA’s Keni Harrison (+160), Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan (+1300), USA’s Christina Clemons (+1300), and USA’s Gabbi Cunningham (+1900).
Camacho-Quinn, who was born in the United States but is eligible to represent Puerto Rice through her mother, is the clear favorite to bring home gold, entering the Tokyo Olympics ranked fifth in the world. These games will be her second straight Olympic appearance after making her debut in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, where she took part in the 100 meter hurdles but crashed in the semifinals and ended up taking 22nd.

For the United States, Harrison, Clemons and Cunningham could make serious runs at Olympic medals in this competition, all within the top five of the list of favorites. Harrison is top-ranked hurdler in the world while taking part in her first Olympics, Clemons is ranked eighth in the world while also participating in her first Olympics, and Cunningham rounds out the group after being added to Team USA after 100 meter favorite Brianna McNeal lost her appeal against a five-year ban to be able to join the USA.

Amusan is tied with Clemons for the third-best odds to bring home the gold medal in 100 meter hurdle competition, entering Olympic competition for the second time after reaching the semifinals in 100 meter hurdles in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. Amusan is a two-time African Championship gold medalist (2018), also having a gold medal from the African Games in 2019.

Best Bets
In the 100 meter hurdles, it’s hard to go against choosing the early favorite Camacho-Quinn to end up claiming gold after a disappointing outing in the 2016 games. But expect the US-born sprinter to at the very least be on the podium in Tokyo.
Outside of Camacho-Quinn, keep an eye on the USA duo of Harrison and Clemons to be somewhat of dark horses to come away with gold. Those two certainly have the capability to come out on top in the end.

USA at the Top of Early Favorites
Atop the list of early favorites for the 400 meter hurdles, Team USA floods the top five with a trio of talented athletes.
USA’s Sydney McLaughlin (-210), the top-ranked hurdler at 400 meters and eighth overall, is the clear favorite going into the start of competition after dominating the Olympic trials by setting a new world record to secure a spot on the Olympic Team in Tokyo. McLaughlin is competing in her second straight Olympics, having placed 17th in the 400 meter hurdles in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. She does hold one gold medal and one silver medal in world championship competition, both of which were won in 2019.
This year Sydney McLaughlin became the first woman in history to break 13.00 for the 100m hurdles, 23.00 for 200m and 53.00 for the 400m hurdles.

In second is USA’s Dalilah Muhammad (+210), who is ranked second in the world in 400 meter hurdle competition and 11th overall. Muhammad is also appearing in her second straight Olympics like McLaughlin, and could make another run at a gold medal in 400 meter competition after doing just that in 2016 in Rio. Muhammad is a four-time medalist in world championship competition as well, claiming two golds in 2019 and two silvers in 2017.

And coming in at fourth is Anna Cockrell (+4400), the 28th ranked hurdler in the world in 400 meter hurdles. Cockrell is making her Olympic debut in Tokyo, having won two gold medals at the 2016 IAAF World Under-20 Championships and one gold medal in the 2015 Pan American Junior Championships.

In 400 meter hurdles competition, you likely won’t go wrong with choosing either McLaughlin or Muhammad. The duo are favorites to claim silver and gold following the final round.
If you had to choose between the two, McLaughlin is just too tough right now and is competing at such a high level. Barring any collisions or mishaps, she should come away with gold in Japan.
