- After their Game 1 stomping of Vegas, the San Jose Sharks have gone from +1400 to +1000 in the Stanley Cup futures
- Do the Sharks have a legitimate shot at their winning their first Stanley Cup?
- Are there any better value picks out there?
It was just one game, but the San Jose Sharks looked far more convincing than any other playoff team out there on Wednesday night in their 5-2 romp over Vegas. With a much improved back end and arguably the deepest collection of forwards in the conference, the Sharks could very well be the team to beat in the West.

Can San Jose pull out a Stanley Cup win?
The San Jose Sharks have been a bit of an anomaly this year. After shocking the hockey world and trading for Erik Karlsson in the offseason, they entered December just 12-10-5 and concern grew.
The team then picked things up, tallied 101 points, finished second in the Pacific, and turned some heads.
Sadly, though, the Sharks entered the playoffs amidst a 3-9 slump and, once again, some jumped ship. Hold on a second, though. The NHL playoffs have nothing to do with the regular season. The tallies go back zero. The odds reset and the contenders emerge through the early going.
So let’s take another look at the San Jose Sharks!

In a league that’s all about offense and a postseason that’s all about experience, the Sharks are absolutely stacked. Led by Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson, they have one of the most electric blue lines out there.
With Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture leading the way up front, flanked by , these Sharks are the total package and could be deadly at +1000 on the Stanley Cup odds board!
Are there any better value squads on the board?
Given their surprising Game 1 loss to Columbus, Tampa Bay’s odds have come down slightly. While that is nice to see, they’re certainly not a “value pick” at +250. For money to be made in the East, look no further than the Boston Bruins.
The Bruins entered the postseason on a 7-4 run, which included three big wins over playoff teams, and are facing an overrated Toronto squad. If the Bruins can get by the Leafs, as expected, they’ll potentially get a huge test against Tampa.
They went 1-3 versus the Lightning in the regular season, but they had a Corsi of 53.4% or higher in three of the four games. In other words, they were dictating play and generating more shots.
As we’ve seen this year, if you can beat T-Bay, you can do anything – because very few have accomplished the feat.

As for the Western Conference, as much as we love San Jose, it’s hard not to give the time of day to the St. Louis Blues. They’re off to a great start and could continue their dominance far past the first round.
