Despite being in the thick of the Eastern Conference Wild Card hunt, the Pittsburgh Penguins have struggled with consistency lately.
Following a six-game losing streak, the Penguins won two and then lost two. With a chance to win back-to-back games, they dropped a wild one in overtime to the Senators on Wednesday.
Despite some bright spots, the Sens need a lot to go right to climb back into the playoff picture. That’s not to say it’s impossible, but they need to start winning games. Earning a second-straight win on Friday would be big.
Puck drop between the Penguins and Senators is set for 7:00 pm ET.

The Senators were favored by some books on Wednesday, but only slightly. FanDuel had Ottawa at (-115) over Pittsburgh (-104). By virtue of home ice, the Penguins are the favorites heading into Friday night.

Pittsburgh is clinging to tenth place in the Stanley Cup odds, tied with the Flames at +1800. The Senators are way down the list at +15000. Montreal is the next closest team at +50000.
Senators Stun Penguins In Overtime
Wednesday’s over was set at 6.5 and it was pretty evident that was going to get left in the dust.
Pittsburgh and Ottawa were tied 2-2 after one and 3-3 after two. Seven different Penguins and seven different Senators recorded a point. Seven different players recorded multiple point games.

Brady Tkachuk scored the winner, capping a four-point night. It was his third goal in the last six games.
Ottawa Senators Betting Trends
Entering Wednesday, the Senators had lost four of their last five, and only one of those losses was by one goal.
Ottawa was outscored 20-5 in those four losses, including a 7-0 loss to the Avalanche.
Senators Last Five Road Games
Opponent | Final Score | Senators Moneyline | Over/Under |
---|---|---|---|
Jan 16 @ STL | 2-1 STL | -115 | 6.5 (Under) |
Jan 14 @ COL | 7-0 COL | +134 | 6.5 (Over) |
Jan 12 @ ARZ | 5-3 OTT | -155 | 6.5 (Over) |
Dec 31 @ DET | 4-2 DET | -130 | 6.5 (Under) |
Dec 29 @ WSH | 4-3 (OT) OTT | +146 | 5.5 (Over) |
Alex DeBrincat scored his 15th goal of the season on Wednesday, which is a good sign for the Sens. Although the production has been there (39 points in 44 games), he hasn’t been as efficient in the goal-scoring category. At this point, DeBrincat is on pace to finish with fewer than 30 goals for just the second time in the last five seasons.
Players to record multiple 20+ goal seasons for the @Senators franchise within their first 3 career NHL campaigns:

While Tkachuk is on pace for a career year, Ottawa’s brightest spot may be Tim Stützle. Following his four-point game against Seattle, the third-year forward was held scoreless for three games. He scored on Wednesday though, and is 16 points shy of tying his career high.
Pittsburgh Penguins Betting Trends
Their back-to-back games against the Senators kick off a key stretch for the Penguins.
After Friday’s game, Pittsburgh will face the Devils, Panthers and Capitals. Two of those teams are jostling with the Pens for positioning in the Wild Card race.
Penguins Last Five Home Games
Opponent | Final Score | Penguins Moneyline | Over/Under |
---|---|---|---|
Jan 16 vs ANA | 4-3 (OT) PIT | -320 | 6.5 (Over) |
Jan 13 vs WPG | 4-1 WPG | -160 | 6.5 (Under) |
Jan 10 vs VAN | 5-4 PIT | -175 | 6.5 (Over) |
Dec 30 vs NJD | 4-2 NJD | -110 | 6.5 (Under) |
Dec 29 vs DET | 5-4 (OT) DET | -190 | 6.5 (Over) |
A big bonus for the Penguins this year has been the health of Evgeni Malkin. Entering this season, Malkin had 144 points over his last 129 games. But he was coming off of two injury-shortened seasons in 2020/21 and 21/22. Malkin finished with a goal and two assists on Wednesday, giving him 44 points on the year.
Sidney Crosby picked up three assists as well, giving him points in five of his last seven games. Crosby has 52 points in 44 games.
Senators vs Penguins Pick
The over has been a very valuable pick when it comes to these two teams.
Three of Ottawa’s last five road games and three of Pittsburgh’s last five home games have gone over. If you’re interested in a savvy side bet, both teams scored in every period on Wednesday. It could happen again.
Considering the offensive firepower on either side, there will be goals again on Friday night.
The Pick: OVER 6.5 (-115); 1 unit
