Leafs, Canes Top NHL Moneyline Wagers

The betting public is backing the Toronto Maple Leafs, Carolina Hurricanes and Colorado Avalanche as the consensus plays on the moneyline tonight. The Leafs are the most bet team by handle at heavy -258 odds in their matchup with the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Leafs are always a heavily bet team, but there are no shortage of reasons they are topping the board tonight. Maple Leafs are aiming to rebound from a 5-2 loss to the Predators that snapped a three-game win streak. The Flyers, meanwhile, are currently on a five-game losing streak, struggling with 10 losses in their last 11 games.

Another interesting storyline is Toronto’s Scott Laughton facing his former team, the Flyers, for the first time since being traded to Toronto. He has yet to record a point in his initial eight games with Toronto, and isn’t even listed among the NHL player props.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes are understandably a top public pick tonight amidst a 9-0-1 run that has improved their Stanley Cup odds. They face a struggling Preds squad that has dropped four of their past five overall.

The Avalanche are the public’s other top moneyline play at against the Detroit Red Wings. The red-hot Avs have won two straight, and they are currently 10-1-1 in their last 12 games. Their opponent won their last game against Utah, but are only 3-8-0 in the month of March. Detroit is also playing on a back-to-back.

Public’s Favorite Puck Line Plays

Unsurprisingly, the teams the public likes on the moneyline tonight are among their favorite puck line plays. The spread or “puckline” in hockey is when a team wins by one or two more goals or the underdog keeps the game within two goals.

The three most wagered on puck line teams by handle are the exact same as the moneyline, except in different order. Colorado tops the board, followed by Carolina and Toronto. If you filter by most bet teams (# of tickets), the Lightning top the board and the Sabres come in third, with Colorado and Toronto dropping out.

I prefer to analyze the actual money wagered over the number of bets, as anyone can drop a couple bucks down on a play or parlay. However, the money wagered tells us which teams the betting public truly feels most confident in betting on a given night.

Buffalo is the only underdog that is among the popular puck line bets tonight. The Sabres sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings but did pull off an impressive 5-2 win over Winnipeg last time out, despite being heavily outshot. Still, you have to pay -192 juice on this bet, and the NHL team trends show Buffalo as one of the least profitable puck line bets in 2024-25.
