  • The Colorado Avalanche are -137 moneyline favorites over the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday Night Hockey
  • Both teams rank top-four in the West in goals against
  • See my Knights vs Avalanche predictions below, plus odds and props

There’s an old saying you save the best for last. The NHL honored that tonight, staging the marquee game of the slate for the final time slot. The Vegas Golden Knights (47-22-8, 20-13-5 away) visit the Colorado Avalanche (47-27-4, 25-11-3 home), with online sportsbooks siding with the home team in the NHL odds.

Puck drop is scheduled for 9:30 pm ET, from Ball Arena, in Denver, CO, with ESPN providing the broadcast coverage.

Knights vs Avalanche Predictions

  • Under 5.5 (+114 at FanDuel)

My prediction is that this game stays under the 5.5 goal total. That number seems incredibly low given the offensive firepower on both sides. However, a closer look reveals these teams are among the best in the West in their own end.

Only the LA Kings, Dallas Stars and Winnipeg Jets have allowed fewer goals than the Golden Knights. The Pacific division leaders actually rank second in expected goals against, and top-eight in high danger chances allowed.

Adin Hill is expected to start in net, and ranks among the league leaders in most goaltending categories. Hill is top-five in wins and shutouts, and ninth in goals against. His save percentage is in the upper half of the league, and he’s performed well in two starts versus Colorado so far this season.

Hill is 1-0-1 versus the Avs, with a 2.40 GAA and .924 save percentage. The Colorado offense comes in hot with 11 goals in its last two games, but I believe the Vegas defense can keep Hart Trophy odds contenders Nathan MacKinnon and Cole Makar in check. The last time the Golden Knights faced the Avs, they held those two scoreless, in a 2-1 shootout defeat.

On the other side, Colorado check in at number four in goals allowed in the West. They’re top-12 in expected goals against and high dangers chances allowed, ranking eighth on the penalty kill.

Mackenzie Blackwood is expected to draw the start between the pipes, and his numbers are even better than Hill’s. Blackwood is top-six in save percentage and shutouts, and top-10 in wins and GAA.

While the Avalanche shooters have been filling the net lately, the same cannot be said for Vegas. The Golden Knights have scored only 11 goals over their past five games. Mark Stone has been held scoreless during that stretch, while Jack Eichel has lit the lamp just once. Eichel enters play riding a four-game pointless streak, his longest drought of the season.

The best odds we can find on under 5.5 goals is +114 at Caesars. Colorado is a -137 moneyline favorite, with Vegas coming back as +114 underdogs. The Avs are +172 to cover the -1.5 puck line, which hasn’t been a profitable bet this season. Per the NHL public betting, Colorado is 33-45 against the spread, which is a bottom-seven mark.

NHL Player Prop odds as of April 8 at FanDuel and DraftKings.

  • Nathan MacKinnon Over 3.5 Shots (-132 at FanDuel)

Switching over to NHL props market, where I’m betting over 3.5 shots for MacKinnon. The 29-year-old has racked up 15 shots in his last three games alone, and has 4+ in both meetings versus the Golden Knights, including a 10-shot outing in their last matchup.

Colorado is one of the premier puck possession teams in the league, ranking third in Corsi For percentage. MacKinnon’s blazing speed allows him to generate more chances than almost anyone else off the rush, while he remains the team’s primary shooter on the powerplay.
