  • The Boston Bruins are -130 home favorites to win Game 3 of their first-round series over the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday, May 6
  • The Hurricanes, up 2-0 in the best-of-seven series, are expected to use No. 3 goalie Pyotr Kochetkov, a 22-year-old rookie

This season the Boston Bruins have had no clue how to deal with the Carolina Hurricanes offensively or defensively. The two teams met three times in the regular-season and the Hurricanes won all three games. The ‘Canes outscored Boston 16-1.

Now, they’ve met twice in these playoffs in Raleigh, North Carolina, and the Hurricanes won twice, outscoring the Bruins 10-3. But the Hurricanes suffered another goalie injury and may be down to their third-string goalie for Game 3 in Boston. That’s why the Bruins are a -130 favorite in Game 3. Goalie injuries are an equalizer. A goalie injury changes everything.

Hurricanes vs. Bruins Injury Report

Already missing starting goalie Freddie Andersen, the Hurricanes lost his backup Antti Raanta during Game 2 when he was hit in the mask by Boston  forward David Pastrnak.  He left in the first period and didn’t return. The Hurricanes didn’t provide information about his injury.

The ‘Canes now face the the possibility of playing Game 3 with No. 3 Pyotr  Kochetkov in net.  He played well in relief of Raanta, but he is an inexperienced goalie.

Meanwhile, Boston Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy announced Thursday that defenseman Hampus Lindholm won’t play Game 3. He suffered an undisclosed injury in Game 2 when he was walloped by Carolina’s Andrei Svechnikov.

Hurricanes vs Bruins Projected Starting  Goalies

Team Goalie Record SV% GAA
Hurricanes Pyotr Kochetkov 1-0 .938 2.30
Bruins Jeremy Swayman 0-0 .000 0.00

The Bruins have already announced Jeremy Swayman will replace Linus Ullmark as the Bruins’ starting goalie in Game 3.  Ullmark gave up eight goals to the Hurricanes on 57 shots in the first two games of the series in Raleigh.

Swayman, 23, is a rookie, but he played half of Boston’s games in net this season. He posted a 2.41 goals-against average and .914 save percentage. He is also older than Kochetkov, 22, who projects to be Carolina’s goalie with Freddie Andersen and Antti Raanta both injured.

Russian Kochetkov spent much of this season in the Kontinental Hockey League. He also played 15 games in the American Hockey League and three games for the Hurricanes before getting pressed into playoff service in Game 2. A second-round pick in 2019, Kochetkov is considered a prize prospect.

Hurricanes vs Bruins Game 3 Prediction

The Hurricanes have owned the Bruins all season. However, the Bruins are too prideful to go down 3-0 in this series. They are home, angry and probably will face an inexperienced goalie unless Raanta makes a miraculous recovery. The Bruins have undoubtedly studied Kochetkov’s game tapes today.

If the Bruins are going to win any game in this series, this will be the one.  With young goalies playing, you would expect a high-scoring game as well.

Pick:  Boston Bruins ML (-135) and Over 5.5 (-120)
