  • The Golden Knights are -142 moneyline favorites on the road over the Red Wings on Sunday
  • Detroit ranks bottom-10 in goals against and shots allowed

Sunday brings afternoon hockey to sweat, including the Vegas Golden Knights (39-18-8) vs Detroit Red Wings (31-29-6) tilt. Vegas suffered a 4-3 shootout loss in Buffalo on Saturday, but online sportsbooks expect them to bounce back in the NHL odds.

Puck drop is scheduled for 1pm ET, with TNT providing the broadcast coverage.

Golden Knights vs Red Wings Prediction

  • Over 6.5 (+105) at Caesars

My prediction is this game produces plenty of offense. The Golden Knights are the Western Conference’s highest-scoring team, and rank top-11 in expected goals for. Detroit slides in right behind them in the ladder category, but unlike Vegas, they’re very accommodating to enemy shooters.

The Red Wings are bottom-10 in goals against. Cam Talbot, who’s expected to start between the pipes, is 27th in save percentage, and in the midst of a tough stretch of form. Talbot has allowed 15 goals in his last four starts. Not surprisingly, Detroit has dropped each decision. The Red Wings have lost seven of eight overall, and have seen their playoff hopes virtually disappear.

Two weeks ago, Detroit held a Wild Card position. Now they’re on the outside looking in, and boast just an 11% chance of making the postseason per ESPN’s metrics.

As for the Golden Knights, the prospect of Ilya Samsonov starting gives the Red Wings a chance to punch back. Samsonov is expected to start after Adin Hill played Saturday afternoon. Hill is a Vezina Trophy odds longshot candidate, and has a significantly better save percentage and GAA than his backup.

Samsonov has struggled to keep the puck out of his net in recent starts. He’s yielded at least three goals in four of his last five appearances, including five a piece to Chicago and Los Angeles, two of the West’s seven lowest-scoring teams.

The Red Wings offense has been underwhelming during their latest skid, but we do know the ceiling can be high. Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat, Patrick Kane and Co. put up 7 goals earlier this week, and the trio has combined for 12 points in their last two games.

The most favorable odds we can find for my best of over 6.5 goals is +105 at Caesars. The Golden Knights are -142 favorites in this contest, and are laying -1.5 on the puckline.

Detroit meanwhile, comes back as a +118 underdog.

NHL Player Prop odds as of March 15 at FanDuel Sportsbook.

Switching over to the player props market, where I’m targeting over 2.5 shots for Pavel Dorofeyev. The 24-year-old is enjoying a breakout season in his third campaign, leading the team in goals with 27. Dorofeyev logs the sixth most ice time among Vegas forwards, and he’s not afraid to shoot the puck.

Only Jack Eichel has registered more shots on goal for the Golden Knights. Dorofeyev has 3+ shots on goal in four of his last five games, and 36 times over the last four months. The Red Wings possess the puck at a below league average rate, and are bottom-10 in shots against.
