The hype has matched the absurdity of the Dallas Starts and the Colorado Avalanche meeting in Round 1 of the NHL playoff bracket, and now there’s real drama being thrown into the mix in a crucial Game 4 matchup Saturday from Denver.
With back-to-back OT wins, the Stars are in position to take a stranglehold in this Best-of-7 series, and a chance to go back home and wrap things up.
Puck drop is scheduled for 9:30 pm ET at Ball Arena, in Denver, CO, with TBS providing the broadcast coverage.
Dallas Stars vs Colorado Avalanche Odds
The books still continue to price the Stars as an underdog, giving them +150 odds to take both games in the Mile High City. The Avs are a -178 moneyline favorite, and +143 to cover the -1.5 puck line. The total sits at six goals. That exact total is 1-1-1 through three games in this series.

Avs Offense Goes Silent in Game 3
The excitement over the return of Gabriel Landeskog to the Colorado lineup was awesome, in what was an electric Ball Arena.
But his return and a Valeri Nichushkin goal in the opening frame was about all the excitement Colorado could generate, as the Avalanche’s offense couldn’t beat Stars goalie Jake Oettinger the rest of the game, as he stopped 26 of 27 shots.
The powerplay went pop-gun in Game 3, failing to convert on all six man-advantage opportunities. So far in the playoffs, Colorado is converting at a 15.4% clip, ranking 13th of 16 playoff teams.
This was a unit that was eighth in the league during the regular season, operating at just under a 25% clip.
If the regular season is any indication, Colorado should be ready to fire back: in the 16 times they were held to a goal or less in a loss, just once all year did it happen in back-to-back games.
Stars Getting Key Contributions
The Stars have played themselves into a winning position – but can they land the plane? NHL history has the Game 3 winner in a best-of-seven series that’s tied 1-1 to move on 66% of the time.
Their latest win was spearheaded by a two players that hadn’t been prominent fixtures in the lineup.
Trailing 1-0 in the second period, captain Jamie Benn got a massive monkey off his back when he scored on the powerplay. Benn had not lit the lamp in his final 17 games of the regular season and first two of this series.
That set the stage for Tyler Seguin’s heroics in overtime. Seguin took a pass from Mason Marchment and put the puck past Mackenzie Blackwood.
This from a guy that missed 58 games this year recovering from hip surgery and didn’t even get back to the lineup until the final game of the regular season.
Stars vs Avalanche Prediction
- Over 6.0 goals (-115 at Caesars)
If this is indeed Colorado’s last stand, I can’t see them going out without peppering Jake Oettinger.
Oettinger has looked good in the last two games, but that’s just two times in his last six games overall that he’s allowed less than four goals.
That’s equal to what Colorado’s Mackenzie Blackwood has put up over his last six games as well, so the goalies are susceptible to getting blown up.
Remember, these are two of the Top six scoring teams in the NHL this year, and with plenty on the line Saturday night, they should revert back to what got them here.
Nathan MacKinnon is already there. He registered a game-high nine shots on goal in Game 3, though he had nothing to show for it, shut out for the first time in the series.
The Over has cashed in four of the last six head-to-heads overall, and should again in what should be another compelling matchup between two way too overqualified Round 1 opponents.
