Stop us if you’ve heard this one before.
The Flyers and Canadiens just played a low scoring, playoff hockey game. This time it was Philadelphia coming out on top thanks to a shutout performance from Carter Hart.
Canadiens vs Flyers Game 4 Odds
Team | Puck Line | Over/Under | Moneyline at DraftKings |
---|---|---|---|
Montreal Canadiens | +1.5 (-230) | O 5 (-134) | +125 |
Philadelphia Flyers | -1.5 (+188) | U 5 (+110) | -143 |
Odds taken August 17th.
Online sportsbooks must have liked what they offered for Game 3, because they decided to keep the Puck Line and Moneyline exactly the same for Game 4. They did however change the total moving the number from 5.5 to 5. You know what that means? Great value to bet on another low scoring game in this series and here’s why.
Defense Beats Offense In Playoff Hockey
Both teams played very well defensively in Game 3 and it resulted in, well, a boring game to watch. The Flyers and Canadiens combined for 43 total shots in the game. To put that number in perspective, the Avalanche fired 52 shots in a regulation loss the other night.

The defenses for both clubs were good in all aspects of the game. The lone goal came at even strength and the two combined to go 0-9 on the power play. Scoring chances and goals didn’t appear to be a priority for either coach, who shaded towards a defensively responsible brand of hockey. Even when the offensive units were let out on the man advantage, it was tough to gain traction after having spent so long seemingly treading water. The coaches have done this for three games now, don’t be surprised to see it again in Game 4.
Hart vs Price Has Been Amazing to Watch
Carter Hart bested Carey Price in Game 3, becoming the youngest goalie in Flyers history to record a playoff shutout. A game earlier it was Price with the shutout when Montreal won the lone lopsided game of the series. This certainly seems to be an “anything you can do I can do better” battle between two premier Canadian goalies. Both are showcasing their skills for the Olympic team in two years time, so it’s fun to watch who might end up with the upper hand.

The three games have all gone Under the number with a total of 9 goals scored. The offensive play has been sloppy at times and the defenses have been solid, but the fact remains when chances do arise there are two premier goalies helping keep tallies off the scoreboard.
Bet the Under Confidently In Game 4
The Canadiens vs Flyers odds show the change made by the odds makers that I eluded to earlier. I see it as great news because I’m now getting plus money with the lowered total. If the number had been set at 5 for the three previous games in the series you’d be 2-0-1 and again, you’re making this wager at plus money.

The time off is starting to show. Teams are getting a maximum of one day rest and are sometimes playing back-to-back which would never happen in playoff hockey under normal circumstances. The difference between 3-1 and 2-2 in the series is huge and both teams know it. Expect the slower game speed and more cautious approach to result in another game favoring both Hart and Price. Bet the under confidently and cheer for the trend to continue.
The Pick: Under 5 (+110)
