A back-and-forth series comes to an end tonight when the Edmonton Oilers visit the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena at 6:10 pm PT/9:10 pm ET. The Oilers staved off elimination with a victory at home in Game 6 but, if they’re going to advance, they’ll have to do something that neither team has done all series: win back-to-back games.

Fortunately for the Oilers, they will be facing a shorthanded Canucks team that’s missing leading goalscorer Brock Boeser (blood clots). Edmonton was a modest -140 favorite before the Boeser news and shortened to -166 after it was reported that Vancouver’s 40-goal man would miss Game 7.

The winner of the Oilers/Canucks series will advance in the NHL playoff bracket to face the West #1 seed Dallas Stars. The Western Conference final will start with Game 1 in Dallas on Thursday, March 23.

Oilers Dominate Game 6 to Keep Season Alive

Facing elimination in Game 6 on Saturday, the Oilers played their best game of the series, dominating nearly the full 60 minutes during a 5-1 victory. Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had three points apiece on Edmonton’s top line. Embattled Edmonton goalie Stuart Skinner – who was replaced by rookie Calvin Pickard in Games 4 and 5 – only faced 15 shots the entire game, stopping 14.

Crucially for Edmonton, they were able to score five goals without a single tally coming on the powerplay. The Oilers’ powerplay, which finished a disappointing fourth in the regular season at 26.3%, was humming along close to 50% in the playoffs, but after going 0-for-8 in Games 5 and 6 combined, has dropped to 36.8% in the playoffs (which is still best in the league).

Game 6 was the first of the series that wasn’t decided by a single goal. It also ended a run of nine-straight one-goal games for the Canucks. Rookie goalie Artus Silovs allowed five goals on 27 shots, showing his first real signs of weakness. Head coach Rick Tocchet confirmed that starter Thatcher Demko remains out for Game 7.

The only injury on the Edmonton side is midseason acquisition Adam Henrique (24 G, 51 PTS), who hasn’t played since Game 2 and has two points in six postseason games.

NHL player props from DraftKings on May 20.

Comparing the player props for Game 7 to the earlier games in the series, most players have seen their odds to score/record a point get longer in what is expected to be a more-defensive battle. That said, McDavid is still listed at -145 to record multiple points, with playoff scoring leader Leon Draisaitl (23 PTS) at -105. JT Miller has the best odds to record at least one point for the Canucks, listed at -230.

Edmonton Oilers vs Vancouver Canucks Prediction

The line movement after the Boeser news was too dramatic. Yes, he was their leading goalscorer in the regular season and leads the team in points during the playoffs (12, tied with JT Miller), but Boeser is an opportunistic scorer; he doesn’t drive the play, and the Canucks’ odds shouldn’t have faded from +120 all the way to +140 in his absence.

Vancouver went 27-9-5 at home during the regular season and is 3-3 in the playoffs. The Oilers are 4-1 on the road so far in the postseason but went just 21-18-2 on the road in the regular season, which is what kept them from winning the division and is why this Game 7 is in hostile territory.

I’m not saying the Canucks deserve to be favored but, at +140 (41.67% implied win probability), they offer better value than the Oilers at -166 (62.41% implied win probability). Skinner has looked shaky when tested throughout this series, including in Game 6 when he was fortunate to face just 15 shots.

I am also going to fade Edmonton defenseman Evan Bouchard, who is listed at -230 to score at least one point. The quarterback of the powerplay, I don’t expect Edmonton to get many opportunities with the man advantage in Game 7, and even if it does, Vancouver’s penalty kill has made crucial adjustments; their more-aggressive box is the main reason Edmonton is 0-for-8 in the  last two games.

EDM vs VAN Game 7 picks:

  • Canucks moneyline (+140)
  • Evan Bouchard under 0.5 points (+175)
