  • The Hurricanes are huge -265 favorites over the Devils on ESPN Tuesday night
  • New Jersey tries to go down the same 0-2 hole against Carolina (2023) while the Hurricanes try to keep control of the series.

The Carolina Hurricanes started off Game 1 in much the same way the Canes did in 2023 against New Jersey. It was hard, fast-paced, forechecking hockey. Simply, New Jersey could not keep up. Jacob Markstrom gamely kept New Jersey in the contest, but the ultimate result was an easy Carolina cover and a 4-1 opening-game victory.

The Carolina Hurricanes will host the New Jersey Devils at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. Online sportsbooks are pretty uniform in the NHL odds.

Puck drop is scheduled for just after 6:00pm ET, with ESPN providing television coverage. ESPN+ is a option for streaming through a cable provider..

Bluntly, Game 1 was rather predictable. New Jersey tried to keep up with the hit parade but ultimately faded, giving up chance after scoring chance. The 4-1 result was deceptive as the game could have easily been 6-1 or 7-1. Going to the well once again, I will not predict Carolina to win by more than 2.5 goals, but it is possible. Instead, taking the spread of 1.5 at plus money is still a reasonable bet.

New Jersey showed some glimpses of firepower late in the Game 1 contest. However, better starts and not taking penalties would be helpful. Special teams is a key in a series like this. For the Devils to have a chance, they must draw penalties and get the Carolina penalty kill nervous in any way. The same goes for even-strength play. If the Devils cannot do this in Game 2, then we are in for another short series like 2023.

The keys to the game are simple. New Jersey must not get cratered early in their defensive end. It is something that has happened in the last several postseason meetings with Carolina. We point to a matchup in November because that was when New Jersey got proactive, played with purpose, and generated penalties. The problem is that only happens at home and every so often. A consistent 60-minute effort is fleeting from a Devils team that is certainly not 100% (see Luke Hughes).

I do believe that again, Carolina holds the hammer and the major edge in Game 2.

TotalOver 5.5 (+110)Under 5.5 (-134)

The Devils vs Canes odds skate in with a total of 5.5 goals, with tilted juice on the over. With the numbers a bit different than Game 1, it may be advisable to hold out as long as possible.

The Canes are still plus money (+106 on FanDuel) to cover the puck line of 1.5 goals. Carolina simply holds an advantage over New Jersey with last line change. Shift by shift, it is very evident.

Seth Jarvis came as close to Logan Stankoven to having not one but two goals on Sunday afternoon. Jarvis had two shots on goal and three scoring chances. Jarvis does not miss often and figures to connect on Tuesday night. I think people may be surprised that this goal total somehow hits six or greater.
