- Alexander Ovechkin can set the all-time record for NHL goals Sunday when his Washington Capitals (49-18-9) face the New York Islanders (33-32-10) at UBS Arena.
- The 39-year-old Ovechkin scored two goals Friday night against Chicago to tie Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 career NHL goals. Ovechkin is in his 20th season.
- I have the game preview and a look at all of the odds connected to Ovechkin’s quest for the record.
All eyes are on Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin as the Capitals (49-18-9; 44-32 ATS) take on the New York Islanders (33-32-10; 36-39 ATS) Sunday afternoon.
The secondary ticket market for this game is crazy. As of Saturday afternoon, single tickets were going for over $200 and rising. It’s all about Ovechkin and the chance to see goal 895 of his career.
Washington has cliched a playoff spot with six games left to go, while the Islanders are barely alive for the last wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, five points behind Montreal.
I have to talk about the Great Eight and what we are all looking for Sunday.
Capitals vs Islanders Odds
Odds as of 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at DraftKings. Lock in on the NHL playoffs with our best DK promo offer.

It’s the first meeting of the year between these two teams. The Caps are 1.5-goal favorites. While Ovechkin has grabbed all the attention this year, Dylan Strome actually leads the Caps in points with 75.
The Islanders had lost six in a row before beating the Wild 3-1 on Friday night. Eight of their last 10 games have hit the over.
Washington has been coasting a bit. They’ve lost four of their last six games.
Ovechkin Props & Odds to Score
- Ovechkin -115 to score (at FanDuel)
- Ovechkin +162 for +5 shots (at FanDuel)
- Ovechkin +2500 for hat trick (at FanDuel)
The Moscow native has 41 goals this season, third most in the NHL. He has scored now in four straight games — talk about finishing strong.
How has he done against the Islanders? He’s scored 44 goals in his career against the Islanders, seventh most of any NHL team. (Winnipeg is No. 1 on Ovi’s list having allowed 57).
In goal, Ovechkin for the Islanders Ovechkin will likely encounter fellow Russian Ilya Sorokin. He’s 28-24 for the Islanders this season with a career low save percentage of .905.
Capitals vs Islanders Prediction
- Capitals -1.5 goals (+170 at DraftKings)
The Islanders look like a team on the ropes. Coach Patrick Roy has seen his team lose star Mathew Barzal to an injury in February. He called Anthony Duclair “God-awful” after a performance last week and Duclair has walked off the team for a while. Yeah, the vibes ain’t so good on Long Island.
Washington has dominated the Eastern Conference this year with seven players over 50 points. Ovechkin has been the talk of the NHL this season. Gretzky records don’t get broken often.
But will Ovi light the lamp against the Islanders? If I had to bet, I would say no. I think he wants to do it at home. He’s definitely thought about this. On Friday, Ovechkin could have taken the ice with the Chicago net empty, but refused to do so. Washington takes on Carolina next. You can get Carolina +240 as the team where Ovechkin breaks the record and I think that’s the play.
