USA Getting Majority of Bets + Handle

According to ESPN Bet, 58% of the bets and 52.3% of the handle are on Team USA to beat Team Canada at -110 odds. This line has lengthened after USA opened as -115 favorites. The discrepancy in bet and money on Team USA indicates there are slightly larger wagers on Canada.

The puck line betting money is a bit tighter, as only 52.5% of bets and 53.4% of the handle are on the Americans to cover. In order for the American puck line to cash, they must win by two goals or more.

When it comes to the over/under, bettors are slamming the “Over”. Despite only four total goals being scored in the first matchup, ESPN Bet reports 76.6% of bets and 81.1% of handle are on OVER 5.5. Our betting expert is fading the public and betting the “Under” in his Canada vs USA prediction.

Adrian Horton, the director of North American Sports Trading for ESPN BET, expects massive betting interest for this game.

The first USA-Canada matchup was our most bet hockey event of the season so far. With anticipation building for tonight’s rematch on ESPN, this feels like a Stanley Cup final game from a trading perspective.

Why The Public is Betting Team USA

If you want to fade the public tonight, betting on Team Canada and the “Under” is the way to go. However, there are very valid reasons why the money is on the blue and white. First and foremost, they won the first game 3-1 thanks to stellar defense.

Top-pair USA defenseman Charlie McAvoy is out per the USA injury report, but the goaltending remains the exact same. Connor Hellebuyck is arguably the best goalie in the entire world, posting a .957 save percentage in this tournament. He turned away 25 shots in the round-robin showdown.

Canada’s goaltending is shaky with Jordan Binnington, who owns a .892 save percentage in the tournament. You never know what type of performance you will get from the Blues’ goaltender, which is why bettors are bullish on Hellebuyck’s USA.

The US has shown they can dictate the pace of this game and utilize their physicality to slow down Canada’s offensive superstars. There were 31 hits in the first period of the round-robin affair, 17 of which came from the US. As long as they can keep things tight and not let Canada get to the middle of the ice, they have a great shot at winning once again.

Outside of McAvoy, it appears Team USA’s other injured/questionable players in Matthew Tkachuk, Brady Tkachuk and Auston Matthews, are all trending towards playing. Canada will get a boost, however, from the return of star blueliner Cale Makar, who didn’t suit up in the first meeting but is now healthy.

Most Bet Anytime Goalscorer
1. Connor McDavid +220
2. Nathan MacKinnon +190
3. Sidney Crosby +350
4. Auston Matthews +190
5. Brayden Point +290

This table shows the top 5 most bet anytime goalscorers in order of betting popularity, with Connor McDavid being the most popular bet at +220 odds.

Canada vs USA player props are also available, and bettors are hammering the popular “anytime goalscorer” market. Although Team USA is getting the majority of money to win, the three most bet anytime goalscorers all reside from the Great White North.

ESPN Bet shares that Connor McDavid at +220 is the most bet anytime goalscorer tonight at their sportsbook, followed by Nathan MacKinnon (+190) and Sidney Crosby (+350). Auston Matthews (+190), the only American on the list, is the fourth-most bet anytime goalscorer.

It’s hard to argue with McDavid being the most bet goalscorer, as he paces Canada with a pair of goals in this tournament. He opened the scoring for Canada early against the Americans on Saturday, showcasing his trademark speed and precision with a backhand finish over Connor Hellebuyck.

One player we will highlight here is MacKinnon, who has had plenty of success scoring against Hellebuyck. The Avs’ superstar has netted 14 goals in 34 career regular-season games against the Vezina favorite, including four in Round 1 of the 2024 Playoffs.

If you’re an American looking to follow the public by adding Auston Matthews anytime goalscorer to your Canada vs USA same-game parlay, tread lightly. Matthews has been battling an injury all season and hasn’t looked like himself lately. He’s capable of lighting the lamp when he’s on, but so far this tournament, he has only one assist and two shots.
