The Pittsburgh Penguins (33-35-12; 41-39 ATS) and Boston Bruins (32-39-9; 34-46 ATS) are closing out disappointing seasons when they meet Sunday at 3:30 pm. For Pittsburgh, this will be their third straight year without a playoff spot, while Boston will miss the playoffs for the first time in eight seasons. There’s conversation around both coaches returning next year. That’s never good.

I’m here to provide insights on the Bruins vs Penguins odds today and what you should consider before placing a bet.

The Penguins are a respectable 41-39 against the spread this season and are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games against the number.

Boston is 34-46 against the spread. They are one of the worst teams on the road in the NHL at just 12-25-3, while the Penguins are 20-14-5 at home. That makes sense for the Penguins, but Boston’s lack of road success is a mystery.

The Bruins have won three of the last four meetings and beat the Pens 3-2 on March 1. Pittsburgh won the first meeting 2-1 in November.

I see some value on the total. Caesars and Bet365 have the total at six goals, but BetMGM and FanDuel have it at 5.5. The Bruins last four games have all hit the over.

The best moneyline price on Pittsburgh is -160 at BetMGM. You can get Boston +136 at DraftKings.

Bruins vs Penguins Prediction

Boston fired coach Jim Montgomery 20 games into season and promoted Joe Sacco to the top of the bench. The Bruins got a spark initially, but that spark faded. They traded star Brad Marchand to Florida in a clear sign that they’re hitting the reset button on the franchise. Sacco’s status is in limbo for next season. Boston probably wants to wait and see who will be available.

Defense has been Boston’s big issue. The Bruins have lost eight of their last 10 games and given up four or more goals six times during that stretch. That’s not winning hockey.

On the plus side, Morgan Geekie has a career-high nine-game point streak.

Pittsburgh is still paying the toll for their Stanley Cup years (09, 16, 17). It’s an old team, but still capable. Sidney Crosby, 37-years old, has 32 goals and 89 points. The Penguins are 9-4-2 in their last 15 games and coming off a win over the Devils Friday. Defense has been the issue for Pittsburgh this season, as well. They’ve allowed 281 goals and both regular goalies give up more than three a game. The Penguins need fresh blood.

Bruins vs Penguins Picks

  • Penguins -1.5 (+155 at BetMGM)
  • Over 6 (-102) at BetMGM

In a game like this, neither team has much to play for except pride. Both have been eliminated from the Stanley Cup odds for a while.

But veteran teams – which both of these are – respond to pride. The Penguins recent surge is proof of that. Pittsburgh goalie Tristan Jarry has won four of his last five starts including two shutouts. I also think Pittsburgh does see finishing at .500 as a goal and something to build on in the off-season. I see a high-scoring game with the Penguins coming out on top.
