The hockey world will be watching with bated breath Friday night as Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals host the Chicago Blackhawks. Ovi sits just two goals shy of tying Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894, and three goals away from standing alone as the greatest goal scorer in NHL history.

Ovechkin couldn’t ask for a better matchup to inch closer to immortality. The Blackhawks own the second-worst record in the NHL and have surrendered the most goals in the Western Conference. Chicago has lost four straight entering this contest, getting outscored 21-9 in the process.

Alex Ovechkin Odds to Score vs Blackhawks

Oddsmakers are bullish on Ovechkin finding the back of the net, pricing him at -135 to score at anytime. That implies a 57.5% probability, which speaks to how favorable this spot is for the greatest goal scorer of all time.

At +500, a multi-goal game has an implied probability of 16.7% according to DraftKings. While that may seem like a longshot, it’s actually quite reasonable for a player of Ovechkin’s caliber in such a juicy matchup.

Alex Ovechkin’s Career Stats vs Blackhawks

Ovechkin has feasted on the Blackhawks over his illustrious career. In 25 meetings, he’s lit the lamp 15 times while adding 15 assists. That works out to 1.20 points and 0.60 goals per game. Most recently, Ovi victimized Chicago for his historic 800th tally in December of 2022.

The Capitals’ captain has scored four power-play goals versus Chicago, which could loom large Friday. The Blackhawks’ penalty kill ranks 25th overall, and Ovechkin’s 10 man-advantage markers are tied for seventh-most in the NHL this season. If the Hawks parade to the penalty box, Ovi will make them pay. He has 318 career power-play goals, the most in NHL history.

Capitals vs Blackhawks Odds to Score First

There’s a strong possibility Ovechkin opens the scoring. He’s tied for the league-lead with 10 game-opening goals, and is a +335 favorite to score first for the Capitals. All things considered, this type of plus-money odds on Ovi to score Washington’s first goal is solid value.

The first goal odds for Blackhawks vs Capitals show four players from the home side with the best chance to light the lamp first. This is reflective of the Chicago’s defensive worse, while aligning with Washington’s heavy moneyline price in the Friday NHL odds.

At +335 odds, Ovechkin has roughly a 23% implied probability of scoring Washington’s first goal, according to the bookmakers. Given his penchant for striking early and often, I love that price. I also wouldn’t fault anyone for sprinkling a little on his +700 odds to score first overall. If the Caps control the opening period on home ice, watch out.

Alex Ovechkin Prop Bets vs Blackhawks

While Ovechkin is certainly capable of notching a hat trick, I don’t see him purposely running up the score in a blowout. The Great 8 has too much respect for the game and his opponents. Plus, he’s stated previously his preference is for the record-breaking goal to be scored on a goaltender rather than an empty net.

Speaking of empty netters, DraftKings is offering a prop on whether Ovechkin’s 895th goal will come with the opposing goalie pulled. “No” is heavily favored at -425, while “Yes” comes back at +300. If the Blackhawks find themselves trailing late, it’s unlikely Ovechkin will be the one to ice the game. He’ll probably defer to a teammate out of respect for the moment.

I’m expecting Ovechkin to have a multi-goal game and get to within one of Gretzky’s hallowed mark. But I believe #895 will have to wait until Sunday afternoon’s nationally televised game versus the Islanders. The hockey world deserves to witness history with the whole world watching.

Regardless, Friday’s matchup with Chicago promises to be must-see TV. Hop on the Ovi goal train now before it’s too late, and check out our Blackhawks vs Capitals prediction for a bet on the game total.
