Biggest NFL Week 1 Spread: Patriots vs Bengals (-9.5)

The biggest spread in the NFL Week 1 odds comes from the New England Patriots vs Cincinnati Bengals game. Joe Burrow and the Bengals are massive 9.5-point home favorites.

With Burrow limited to half a season due to a wrist injury last year, Cincinnati still managed to go 9-8 last year, missing the postseason by just a game. The year prior – with a fully healthy Burrow – the Bengals went 12-4. The Patriots, meanwhile, went 4-13 last season and still haven’t officially named their Week 1 starting QB. The job will likely go to journeyman Jacoby Brissett, but rookie third-overall pick Drake Maye is also an option, especially if Brissett’s recent shoulder injury lingers.

The Patriots, who finished with the fourth-worst point differential in the league last year (-130) and tied Carolina for fewest points scored (236), used their first five picks in the 2024 draft on offense. While that should lead to a little more potency with the ball, it could mean a long day for a middling New England defense, which will have to find ways to contain Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and newly acquired running back Zack Moss.

Highest NFL Week 1 Total: Rams vs Lions (51.5 O/U)

The largest game total on the board in Week 1 comes from the LA Rams vs Detroit Lions matchup in the Motor City, which has an O/U of 51.5, a full two points higher than any other game. (Jaguars/Dolphins is the second-highest at 49.5.) The Lions were an absolute over machine in 2023, going 13-7 O/U including the postseason. They finished fifth in the league in scoring (27.1 PPG) but had a bottom-ten scoring defense (23.2 PAPG).

Detroit made efforts to shore up its  secondary, using the #24 and #29 overall picks in the 2024 draft on cornerbacks (Alabama’s Terrion Arnold and Missouri’s Ennis Rakestraw Jr), but there is ample work to be done for a group that surrendered 7.8 yards per pass last year (second-worst in the NFL).

The Rams were 9-9 O/U but that was with a ton of injuries on offense. If Matthew Stafford, Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua, and Demarcus Robinson are all healthy – plus second-round running back Blake Corum – the Rams’ offense should look much more dynamic than it did in 2023.

This will also be LA’s first season without three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald after the 33-year-old retired in the offseason. An eight-time First Team All-Pro, Donald was still near the peak of his powers last season and is arguably the biggest defensive loss for any team heading into 2024.

Biggest Public-Betting Splits for NFL Week 1

Week 1 of every season is the only week where the public has nearly two weeks to wager on every game. The NFL public betting splits for Week 1 this season see a the public hammering a handful of teams against the spread.

The largest ATS splits so far are from the Arizona Cardinals vs Buffalo Bills, where the visiting Cardinals are getting 82% of ATS handle as 6.5-point underdogs, and the Jacksonville Jaguars vs Miami Dolphins, where the hometown Phins are getting 82% of handle as 3.5-point favorites.

The public is only backing one plus-money underdog on the moneyline, putting 84% of moneyline handle on the Dallas Cowboys as +102 road underdogs at the Cleveland Browns.
