There are key rivalries and a revenge match highlighting the Week 5 NFL odds, spreads and line movement.
The defending AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals are visiting the Baltimore Ravens in a huge AFC North showdown. Meanwhile, in a rivalry that stems back to the old AFL days in its bitterness, AFC West foes the Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders are clashing yet again.
There’s real curiosity about the game in Foxboro between the New England Patriots and Detroit Lions. Last week, Detroit failed to cover for the first time this season in NFL team trends. But the Lions did hit the over for the fourth successive week. Should the Patriots win this game, will they carry assistant coach and former Lions head coach Matt Patricia on their shoulders in a victory lap around the field?
In the NFL odds, the spreads are spread out for Week 5. Seven of the 16 games are showing teams as favorites of a touchdown or more. Buffalo is the two-touchdown chalk against Pittsburgh. Jacksonville is favored by seven points over Houston, even though the Texans are 8-0 straight up in the past eight meetings with the Jaguars.
Before launching into this week’s line movement, let’s look at the up-to-date Week 5 NFL odds.

Week 5 Biggest Line Movement
The Carolina Panthers are a hot mess. Baker Mayfield acquired to be their QB1, is already hearing rumblings that his job may be in jeopardy. Mayfield has yet to throw for multiple touchdowns or 240 yards in a game as a Panther. His passer rating is a dismal 75.0. There’s also talk that the team may be looking to move running back Christian McCaffrey, among the best all-purpose backs in the NFL, before the trade deadline.
Baker Mayfield took a $3.5M pay cut to join Panthers. Looks like a mistake
Mayfield is the least efficient QB in the NFL. He's ranked 33rd of 33 qualifying QBs in expected points added per play and ranks 32nd in completion % over expected. And this year, there's no injury excuse pic.twitter.com/uw1FVDFjL9

This uncertainty surrounding Carolina is evident at NFL betting sites. The line on the Carolina vs San Francisco 49ers game has jumped from 49ers -3.5 to San Francisco -6.5. That’s the biggest line movement of any NFL game in Week 5. If anything, it could grow even longer before Sunday’s 1 pm ET kickoff.
Biggest Total Movement In Week 5 NFL Lines
Who had Geno Smith being the NFL’s most efficient QB one month into the season on their bingo card? Well, the Seahawks QB isn’t quite all the way there yet, but with a passer rating of 108.0, Smith is trailing only Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa and Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes.

Seattle put up 48 points last week in beating the Detroit Lions on the road. The Seahawks also gave up 45 points to Detroit and are surrendering 28.8 points per game. That’s 31st in the NFL. New Orleans is coughing up 24 points per game. Any wonder then that the total on the Seahawks-Saints game is showing the biggest movement of Week 5, growing from 42.5 to 46.5 points?
NFL History Spread Into Buffalo
If the spread on the Bills-Steelers doesn’t shorten prior to kickoff, it will be creating NFL history. In the Super Bowl era (since 1970) only one NFL team has never been an underdog of 14 points or greater. That would be the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“You guys and everyone else thinks we’re underdogs. We don’t.”

Currently the Steelers, who are giving rookie QB and 2022 first-round draft pick Kenny Pickett his first NFL start on Sunday, are 14-point road underdogs at Buffalo. That’s the largest spread of any Week 5 NFL game.
Titans Given Shortest Week 5 Spread
Two weeks in a row, the Tennessee Titans have covered and in fact, won outright as underdogs. However, Tennessee is 4-8 ATS in the last 12 games in which the Titans have been favored.

The Washington Commanders are 0-3 ATS over the past three weeks. Still, the line on this game is just Tennessee -1.5, the shortest spread of Week 5. There’s certainly reluctance to back the Titans considering their poor ATS record as the chalk. On the other hand, the Titans are 5-0 ATS in their last five visits to the nation’s capital.
Panthers vs 49ers Set With Lowest Total of Week 5
Neither the 49ers (27th, 19.8 points per game) or the Panthers (17th, 19.5 PPG) are averaging 20 points per game this season.
"You're always going to be criticized… You're not here for long, so you just need to make it count." -Jimmy Garoppolo
— Niners Nation (@NinersNation) October 4, 2022
If you’ve watched work of Mayfield or San Francisco’s Jimmy Garoppolo under center this season, then you completely understand why this game has the lowest total of Week 5 at 39.5 points.
Week 5’s Highest Total is
The Raiders vs Chiefs total of 51.5 points is the highest of Week 5. This will be the seventh time in the last eight Raiders vs Chiefs games that the total is being set on the long side of 50 points. The last three have gone over, but three of the previous four hit on the under. As well, two of the last three games between the two teams played in Kansas City with a total of 50+ points have gone under.

In the NFL public betting trends. bettors are loving the under on this game. There are 92% of bets and 90% of the handle backing the under. Including Thursday’s 12-9 thriller between the Colts and Broncos, unders are 10-4 in prime-time games this season.
