The streaking Green Bay Packers will try to keep their playoff hopes alive when they host the Minnesota Vikings at 4:25 p.m. ET Sunday in a New Year’s Day game at Lambeau Field.

The Packers (7-8, 4-3 home) won their third game in a row on Christmas Day when they beat the Dolphins 26-20 in Miami. The Packers can reach the playoffs if they win their last two games and either the Washington Commanders lose once more, or the New York Giants lose their two remaining games.

The Vikings (12-3, 4-2 road) have wrapped up the NFC North title and are winners of four of their last five games. They edged the Giants 27-24 last week at home.

The game will be televised by CBS.

The Packers are three-point favorites and -175 choices on the moneyline in the NFL odds, giving them a 63.64% implied win probability. The Vikings have +2200 Super Bowl odds and Green Bay is listed at +6000.

The weather forecast calls for mostly cloudy, a high of 38 and west wind at 5-7 mph.

Vikings vs Packers Recent History

The Vikings beat the Packers 23-7 at home on Sept. 11 in the season opener, the only game Minnesota has won all year by more than eight points. The Vikings’ Kirk Cousins passed for 277 yards and two touchdowns, both going to Justin Jefferson, who had nine catches for 184 yards. He could be worth a play in your Vikings vs Packers props.

The Vikings have won three of the last four meetings. Their only loss came last season with Cousins sitting out while on the COVID-19 reserve list.

Vikings Offense vs Packers Defense

Jefferson’s big performance in Week 1 set the tone for what has been a monster season. He has set team records with 123 receptions and 1,756 receiving yards.

The Packers surprisingly opened that game playing zone defense and Jefferson continually got wide open. Look for Green Bay to put cornerback Jaire Alexander, its only Pro Bowl selection this season, on Jefferson in man-to-man coverage this time.

Jefferson’s NFL MVP odds are +7000.

Alexander has a career-high five interceptions, including two in the last three games. Fellow cornerback Rasul Douglas has a pick in each of the last two games for a Packers defense that is third in the NFL against the pass but 27th against the run.

Outside linebacker Preston Smith has registered three sacks in his last two games and five in his past five.

Packers Offense vs Vikings Defense

The Packers offensive line is banged up. That could spell trouble for 39-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers against a Vikings pass rush featuring Danielle Hunter and Za’Darius Smith.

Hunter has a team-leading 10.5 sacks and Smith, a Pro Bowler this season, is right behind with 10. While playing for the Packers, Smith had 26 sacks combined during the 2019 and 2020 seasons before being limited to two games in 2021 because of injuries.

Despite the duo of Hunter and Smith, the Vikings are last in the NFL in pass defense.

Packers running back Aaron Jones has 1,335 scrimmage yards this season with 962 rushing and 373 passing. However, he is trying to play through knee and ankle injuries that limited him to being on the field for just 37% of the offensive snaps last week.

Vikings vs Packers Injury Report

The Packers expect to get offensive tackle David Bakhtiari (appendectomy) back after he missed the last three games. Cornerback Keisean Nixon (groin) and wide receiver Christian Watson (hip) are questionable. Defensive lineman Dean Lowry (calf) was placed on injured reserve this week.

Ruled out for the Vikings are center Garrett Bradbury (back) and defensive tackle James Lynch (shoulder). Bradbury will sit out his fourth straight game while Lynch was hurt in last week’s game.

Vikings vs Packers Prediction

The Packers will be playing with much more desperation than the Vikings, which is a significant factor at this time of the season. Look for Green Bay to win and cover, though it should be close.

Pick: Packers -3 (-115)
