Miami Dolphins AFC East Odds After Trading for Tyreek Hill; Chiefs Still AFC West Favorites

Tyreek Hill has a new team along with a new distinction of being the highest-paid wide receiver in NFL history.

The Kansas City Chiefs traded Hill to the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday for a package of five draft picks, including first- and second-rounders this year. Hill then agreed to a four-year, $120 million contract of which $72.2 million is guaranteed and has an average annual value of $30 million.

The deal comes just days after the Las Vegas Raiders acquired Davante Adams from the Green Bay Packers and signed him to a deal with a $28 million AAV and $65.65 million in effective guarantees.

The trade improved the Dolphins’ AFC East odds from +600 to +400. That gives Miami a 20% implied probability of winning its first division title since 2008.

The addition of Hill has improved the Dolphins’ AFC championship odds from +3000 to +2000 and their Super Bowl odds from +4500 to +4000.

Dolphins Get Playmaker

Hill gives the Dolphins a much-needed playmaker with his game-breaking speed.

Miami went 9-8 last season under coach Brian Flores, who was then fired. It was 22^nd in the NFL in scoring offense with 20.1 points a game and 25^th in total offense at 307.0 yards a game.

No Dolphins receiver with at least 15 receptions in 2021 averaged more than DeVante Parker’s 12.9 yards per catch. Quarterback Tua Tangovailoa has taken his share of heat from Dolphins’ fans in his first two seasons, but he also hasn’t had a target nearly the caliber of Hill.

New head coach Mike McDaniel received much credit for developing Deebo Samuel into one of the top threats in the NFL by utilizing him as a hybrid wide receiver/running back while serving as the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive coordinator.

It is easy to envision McDaniel using Hill in the same manner. The 28-year-old has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his six seasons and is a three-time All-Pro.

Hill had a career-high 111 receptions last season for 1,239 yards and nine touchdowns. He also rushed for 96 yards on nine attempts, an impressive average of 10.7 yards a carry.

The Dolphins also have Jaylen Waddle, who registered 104 catches as a rookie last season. Furthermore, Miami put the franchise tag on tight end Mike Gesicki and signed wide receiver Cedrick Wilson and running back Chase Edmonds in free agency.

Whether that is enough for the Dolphins to leapfrog the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots in the AFC East standings is debatable, but Miami should score more points.

Chiefs Lose Offensive Weapon

The Chiefs lost a big part of an offense that finished third in the league in total yardage (396.8) and fourth in scoring (28.2) last season by dealing Hill. It is also not a coincidence Kansas City won the AFC West title in each of his six seasons.

The Chiefs’ futures to win the division have lessened from +155 to +175 and their odds to win the Super Bowl has gone from +800 to +900. However, Mahomes’ NFL MVP odds are holding steady at +750.

Mahomes still has the game’s premier tight end in Travis Kelce, who has had at least 92 catches in each of the past four seasons while making the Pro Bowl each year.

Mecole Hardman took a step forward in 2021. The wide receiver had a career-best 59 receptions in his third NFL season.

The Chiefs also signed free agent receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. They hope the former Pittsburgh Steelers star can return to his 97-catch form of 2020 after having last season ruined by a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Kansas City is no longer an automatic pick to win the division following the loss of Hill, though. The Denver Broncos look like formidable challengers following the trade for Russell Wilson and the Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers should be playoff contenders, too.
