This season begins much like last season ended as the Las Vegas Raiders visit the  LA Chargers for this Week 1 division battle on Sunday, September 11th.

Out of nowhere, the AFC West became the NFL’s most explosive division this off-season. Now boasting the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, Derek Carr and Russell Wilson at quarterback, this group could be the class of the NFL.

You can watch this matchup on CBS. Kickoff is set for 4:25pm ET from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

This spread has shifted slightly in the Raiders’ favor since opening at -4.5. Adding the hook makes this a challenging game to handicap, but there is still value to be had. The public is all over the Las Vegas in this one, as 86% of bettors like the Raiders against the spread.

Raiders Week 1 Betting Notes

Las Vegas will be chomping at the bit to see their new team in action on Sunday. Trading for the best receiver in football doesn’t happen every year. If you haven’t heard, Davante Adams and Derek Carr are also best friends. The Fresno State alums return to their home state looking for a victory in week 1.

A new era begins for the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. Armed with Adams, new head coach Josh McDaniels’ job just got a lot easier. The offensive mastermind was a significant piece of the Patriots success in the past decade, winning three Super Bowls as Bill Belichick’s offensive coordinator. He may not have Tom Brady anymore, but an offense with Derek Carr, Adams, Hunter Renfrow and Darren Waller is an awfully nice consolation.

On defense, the Raiders added star pass-rusher Chandler Jones. Since 2012, Jones leads the league in sacks with 107.5. He’ll pair nicely with homegrown stud Maxx Crosby.

Chargers Week 1 Betting Notes

After failing to make the post-season in 2021, the Los Angeles Chargers enter the season with more questions than answers.

The football world is aware of what quarterback Justin Herbert can do offensively. His pace has not been matched by any pivot in NFL history. Herbert has the most yards (9,350) and passing touchdowns (69) through two years ever. However, the Chargers have failed to make the playoffs in either of his two seasons in the NFL. Los Angeles famously bowed out of playoff contention in the final game of the 2021 NFL season, losing to these very same Raiders.

Fans and pundits are more concerned about the other side of the football. Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco added veteran pass-rusher Khalil Mack and star corner, JC Jackson, to a defense that leaked like a sieve in the back half of last season. Los Angeles also signed defensive tackle Sheldon Joseph-Day to beef up a defensive line that was destroyed in the run game time and time again.

Las Vegas Raiders vs LA Chargers Pick

Each of these teams are armed with enough firepower to put up points in bunches. Neither team will struggle to move the football this season. This matchup comes down to which defense can bend, but not break. The Raiders’ defense was actually slightly better in 2021, finishing 17th in DVOA while the Chargers finished 26th. All things considered, both units have a lot to prove entering 2022.

Quite simply, the “over” looks to be the best bet on the board. Star Chargers corner J.C. Jackson is unlikely to play, and the Raiders cornerback room is shaky at best.

Pick: Las Vegas Raiders vs LA Chargers OVER 52.5 (-110); 1 unit
