Two legit Super Bowl contenders square off on Monday Night Football, but neither the Jets or the 49ers will be at full strength for the Week 1 showdown.

New York’s biggest absence is pass rusher Haason Reddick, who’s holding out for a new contract after coming over from Philadelphia. San Fran, meanwhile, will be missing multiple starters and potentially Christian McCaffrey, the reigning Offensive Player of the Year.

The 49ers are anywhere from a 3.5 to 4-point favorite in the NFL odds, with the bulk of the spread tickets and handle coming in on the Jets per the NFL public betting percentages.

49ers Dealing With Plenty of Injuries

McCaffrey has missed at least one game in five straight seasons. He played a total of just 16 games between 2020 and 2022, with varying injuries including a high ankle sprain (twice), a shoulder A/C joint sprain, and a hamstring strain.

CMC relies heavily on his explosiveness, something that will likely be hindered by calf and Achilles issues even if he does play. Depth at running back has not been an issue for San Fran in the past, but backup Elijah Mitchell was recently placed on IR with a hamstring.

If McCaffrey can’t go or is limited, Jordan Mason will see extended playing time. Mason averaged 5.2 yards per carry in limited action last season, but is nowhere near the threat McCaffrey is in the passing game.

Speaking of the passing game, Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams will both be on the field after agreeing to new contracts recently, although Aiyuk is expected to be on a snap count.

One receiver who won’t suit up for the Niners is first round pick Ricky Pearsall. The Florida product is also on IR as he recovers from a gunshot wound he suffered a week ago.

On the other side of the ball, San Fran has issues as well. Starting safety Talanoa Hufanga is doubtful with a knee injury, while linebacker Dre Greenlaw is on IR recovering from an Achilles injury.

Reddick’s Absence Is Jets Biggest Concern

The injury situation is far less daunting for the Jets. Aside from a couple depth pieces in Wes Schweitzer and Zaire Barnes, the team is in good health.

A pass rushing specialist like Reddick would boost New York’s defensive ceiling, but even without him this team is loaded on all three levels as detailed in the Jets vs 49ers odds. Reddick is only a year removed from a 16 sack campaign, and has double digit sack totals in four straight seasons.

A major boost for New York is a healthy Aaron Rodgers. The three-time MVP doesn’t carry an injury designation into Monday’s contest, and will be making his first start since tearing his Achilles in Week 1 last season.

Injuries Have Affected the Jets vs 49ers Betting Lines

When NFL betting lines were released in May, San Fran opened as a 6.5-point favorite versus the Jets. That number has steadily been bet down to where it sits, at first due to the holdouts of Williams and Aiyuk, and now thanks to the major Niners injury concerns.

If McCaffrey can’t go, we could see this spread fall to San Fran -3. If he’s ruled in, it could easily climb back up to -4.5 or -5. The 49ers are 3-4 in games where CMC sits, and have dropped their last two contests without their star RB.
