The Carolina Panthers nearly won the weak NFC South this season. Yet they are looking for a coach.
Matt Ruhle was fired after the Panthers got off to a 1-4 start. Assistant Steve Wilks was promoted to interim head coach and Carolina went 6-6 under, finishing one game behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the division standings.
Wilks is in the mix for the permanent job. He is listed in the Panthers next head coach odds that have been set on who will coach the Panthers in 2023.

Candidates in Panthers Next Head Coach Odds
As of Tuesday morning, the Panthers had interviewed nine candidates for their vacancy. The list includes former Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell, Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, University of Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, Detroit OC Ben Johnson, New York Giants OC Mike Kafka, Dallas Cowboys OC Kellen Moore, former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, Philadelphia Eagles OF Shane Steichen and Wilks.
Harbaugh and Johnson both removed their names from consideration.
Owner David Tepper also reportedly plans to talk with former Colts head coach Frank Reich and San Francisco 49ers DC DeMeco Ryans.
Steichen the Favorite
Steichen is the favorite at +260 odds to be the Panthers next head coach.
That is not surprising considering the Eagles are on the cusp of playing in the Super Bowl. They host the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in the NFC Championship Game.
The Eagles were second in the NFL in total offense during the regular season with an average of 389.1 yards a game and third in scoring with a 28.1 average. They rolled to a 38-7 victory over the New York Giants last Saturday night in a divisional-round playoff game after earning a bye as the NFC’s #1 seed.

Jalen Hurts has thrived under Steichen’s tutelage. Hurts is in the NFL MVP mix after having a combined 4,461 yards of total offense and 35 touchdowns in the regular season despite missing two games with a shoulder injury.
The 37-year-old Steichen has been an NFL assistant since 2011 and has also had stints with the Cleveland Browns and Chargers. He is in his second season as the Eagles’ OC.
Next on the List
The second and third choices are Payton at +350 and Wilks at +400.
Payton, who stepped away from the Saints at the end of last season, is presently working as a studio analyst for Fox. However, he knows plenty about the NFC South.
New Orleans captured the NFC South title in seven of Payton’s 15 seasons as coach and reached the playoffs nine times. He compiled a 152-89 record, won the Saints’ lone Super Bowl title in 2009, and is the winningest coach in franchise history.

In addition to stepping in for Ruhle this season, Wilks was the Arizona Cardinals’ head coach for one year in 2018. It was a disaster as the Cardinals went 3-13.
Wilks provided a steady hand for the Panthers after Ruhle was fired. Despite using three different starting quarterbacks, Carolina nearly reached the playoffs.
Many Panthers have lobbied for Wilks to have interim removed from his title.
Payton the Pick for Panthers Next Head Coach
Tepper is believed to want to hire an offensive-minded coach who can identify a franchise quarterback and develop him. Payton fits that mold as he turned Drew Brees into one of the greatest passers in NFL history while with the Saints.
Tepper is one of the richest owners in the league, so he has the money to pay Payton. The Panthers also have the draft capital necessary to make a trade with the Saints, who hold Payton’s rights.
Thus, Payton looks like the wise wager at +350 in the Panthers next head coach odds.
