As another NFL season dawns, it would appear that everything old is new again.

Is there life after Tom Brady? Oddsmakers aren’t hopeful. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 5.5-point road favorites at the Minnesota Vikings in their Week 1 matchup. Meanwhile, with the Jordan Love era beginning in Green Bay, the Packers find themselves as 1-point road underdogs at the Chicago Bears.
Even though the games might still be months away from kickoff, the excitement is palpable. Let’s look at the opening Week 1Â NFL odds.

Chiefs vs Lions Expected To Pile Up Points
It’s no surprise at all to see the Kansas City Chiefs game assigned the highest total for Week 1 of the NFL season. Factor in their opponents the Detroit Lions and it makes even more sense.
Last season, 12 of Kansas City’s 17 games were given totals of 50+ points. However, the Chiefs only hit the over in four of those games.
Andy Reid Week 1 since 2015:
• 8-0
• KC Points Per Game: 36.4
• Margin of Victory: 12.4 points/game— Al Karsten (@FootballGuy_Al) May 11, 2023
As for the Lions, six of their games last season kicked off with a total of 50 or more points. And the Lions were big over players, going 4-2 on the total in those games.
And as much as the Lions are clearly the flavor of the month in the NFL, they’ll be hard-pressed to find themselves putting a crooked number in the win column during Week 1. Since 2015, the Chiefs under head coach Andy Reid are 8-0 straight up, have scored on average 36.4 points per game and posted an average margin of victory of 12.4 ppg.
Texans Expected To Take It On The Chin
Just as the Chiefs are all about big totals, the Houston Texans are the NFL experts when it comes to facing long spreads. The Texans will travel to Baltimore in Week 1, facing the Ravens as 9.5-point underdogs. That’s the biggest spread among all opening-week games.
Last season, the Texans were an underdog of 9.5 points or more in five games. Houston was 4-1 against the spread in those games. During the 2022 campaign, Baltimore was 1-6-1 ATS at home. Only Tampa Bay (1-7-1) was worse among the 32 NFL clubs.
Where’s The Love For Packers?
Back on September 8, 2008, when Aaron Rodgers made his first start as Green Bay Packers QB, the Pack were 2.5-point home favorites over the Minnesota Vikings and covered in a 24-19 victory.
A little over 15 years later, Jordan Love is finally taking the reins of the Green Bay offense from the hands of Rodgers, but he isn’t being embraced so warmly. The Packers will go to Chicago in Week 1 as 1-point road underdogs to the Bears. That’s the smallest spread assigned to a Week 1 game.
How Low Will Commanders vs Cardinals Go?
In his lone NFL start as a rookie, Washington Commanders QB Sam Howell beat the Dallas Cowboys 26-6 in a meaningless Week 18 game. During the six games that Kyler Murray didn’t start for the Arizona Cardinals last season, they were 1-5 and only got to 20 points once.
Murray (torn ACL) won’t be a ready for the season opener Any wonder then that the total for this game of 41 points is the lowest of any Week 1 game?
Rodgers Getting Tough Week 1 NFL Assignment
As he sets out on his New York Jets journey, Rodgers will be facing the best team in the NFL AFC East on Monday Night Football when the Jets play host to the Buffalo Bills. Oddsmakers are setting the visitors as the 2.5-point chalk.

In his final five games as Packers starting QB, Rodgers went 4-1 SU and ATS. He even covered against the Bills last season at Buffalo. The Bills were 4-3-1 ATS as a road favorite in 2022.
Can Joe Burrow His Way Through Battle Of Ohio?
Joe Burrow has fashioned an impressive list of accomplishments as an NFL QB. However, one thing the Cincinnati Bengals signal caller hasn’t mastered is dominance of their cross-state rivals.
He’s just 1-4 SU against the Cleveland Browns. Burrow has been picked off five times by Cleveland, more than any other team.
At Cleveland in Week 1, the Bengals are opening as a 2.5-point road pick. Burrow is 0-2 SU and 1-1 ATS in two career away starts against the Browns.
