Travis Hunter is seeing the most Heisman betting handle at MGM as of late June. “Handle” is the amount of money wagered by bettors, which is different than the total number of tickets (ie bets).

The current Heisman odds price Georgia QB Carson Beck as the favorite to win, and he isn’t far behind the Colorado stars in terms of betting handle (11.6%).

Hunter, Sanders Are Popular Heisman Picks

BetMGM Sportsbook has released data showing which players are receiving the most betting handle to win the Heisman in the 2024 college football season. It should come as no surprise to those following the sport that the two players receiving the most money are from Colorado.

Two-way star Travis Hunter is receiving 16.5% of the Heisman betting handle at BetMGM, while QB Shedeur Sanders isn’t far behind at 13.8%. UGA pivot Carson Beck is third on the list at 11.6%. These numbers are exclusive to BetMGM, so other sportsbooks may report different numbers.

We aren’t surprised by these numbers as something similar occurred last season. Hunter and Sanders both drove the majority of preseason Heisman handle. Colorado was also heavily bet in the early National Championship odds, and we all know how that turned out.

Interestingly enough, these players are both outside the top 15 in the current Heisman odds, with Sanders sitting at +3000 and Hunter priced at +5000. Bettors clearly like the long-shot value on these studs, although it’s worth noting Sanders has faded from his previous price of +2500 despite the public betting interest.

Which Player is the Best Bet?

Hunter and Sanders are both projected top 10 picks in the 2025 NFL Draft and will likely remain in the Heisman conversation all season. Hunter was a game-changer on both sides of the ball in his CU debut season, while Sanders was among the CFB passing leaders.

While the talent is clearly there, injuries and a weak offensive line kept these two players from receiving Heisman votes last season. The Buffaloes limped to a 4-8 record in 2023, including 1-8 in Pac-12 play. The move to the Big 12 conference should help Colorado pick up more victories.

We have a hard time confidently telling you to bet Sanders to win the Heisman despite him being the son of a legend. Sanders is going up against some very talented quarterbacks at premier programs, such as Georgia’s Beck, Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel, and Texas’ Quinn Ewers.

Stats matter for this award, and Sanders won’t have as many elite weapons around him as someone like Beck will have at Georgia. Even if Colorado does improve, it might not be by much, according to the college football win totals.

Hunter is at least worth taking a flier on due to his versatility playing both sides. He makes for a great story for the media members if he can stay healthy the entire year. Hunter racked up 721 receiving yards in 2023 while recording 30 total tackles, three interceptions, and five pass breakups on defense.

There have already been four two-way players who have won the Heisman, showcasing Heisman voters’ appreciation for two-way players. Hunter has been named the 2024 Big 12 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and offers more upside than Sanders in the Heisman futures.
