No coach in college football was on a hotter seat when the season began than Scott Frost. Thus, it was not a shocker Sunday when Frost was fired at Nebraska following a lackluster 1-2 start.
The last straw came Saturday when Nebraska lost to Georgia Southern 45-42 at home as a 23-point favorite.
Frost, who led Nebraska to the national championship as quarterback in 1999, went 16-31 in five seasons at his alma mater. Cornhuskers athletic director Trev Alberts pulled the plug on Frost, even though his buyout would have dropped from $15 million to $7.5 million on Oct.1
Associate head coach Mickey Joseph will serve as interim coach for the remainder of the season.

Campbell The Favorite
Iowa State coach Matt Campbell is the +400 favorite to replace Frost, and it makes quite a bit of sense.
Campbell has led Iowa State to perhaps its most sustained run of success in program history. The Cyclones are 44-34 in seven seasons since he arrived from Toledo in 2016 and have played in five consecutive bowl games.
He is beloved in Ames for his down-to-earth nature.

Ames is just a 3.5-hour drive from Lincoln on Interstate 80, so Cornhuskers fans are surely familiar with Campbell’s success.
Campbell continues to say he is committed to Iowa State and has no desire to leave. However, the allure of moving from the Big 12 to the Big Ten might be enough for Campbell to land in Lincoln.
Next on The List
The coaches with the next-best odds are Joseph at +450 and Kentucky’s Mark Stoops at +500.
Joseph is also a former Cornhuskers quarterback and was the associate head coach for Ed Orgeron in 2019 when LSU won the national championship.
Joseph has just two years of head coaching experience and that was at the NAIA level with Langston in Oklahoma, However, he will get ample opportunity to prove himself the rest of this season, though he has a tough debut Saturday when #6 Oklahoma visits Lincoln.

Kentucky is a basketball school, but Stoops has gone 61-53 in 10 seasons in Lexington. The Wildcats have a string of six consecutive bowl appearances, including winning their last four.
Kentucky is 2-0 this season and ranked #9. However, Stoops has at times publicly chafed at football playing second fiddle to John Calipari and the basketball program.
The Value Play
Kansas coach Lance Leipold’s odds are listed at +1000. The biggest question about Leipold’s candidacy is if Alberts and Nebraska could sell him to the fans.
However, Kansas is off a 2-0 start in Leipold’s second season. It is the first time the Jayhawks have won their first two games in a season since 2011.

Leipold won six – SIX! – Division III national titles at Wisconsin-Whitewater and got Buffalo into the top 25 in his first Division I job. Furthermore, he was an assistant coach at Nebraska from 2001-03 and was on the staff at Nebraska-Omaha for 10 years.
Leipold might not be the sexiest name on this list but is the most worthwhile wager.
