Aztecs Help Mountain West Save Face

The Mountain West was 0-4 heading into San Diego State’s matchup with #12 UAB on Friday. Last year’s national runner-up looked to be in control up six at halftime and stretched the lead to 12 early in the second. The Blazers came all the way back to take a 58-55 lead with just six minutes to play, but Jaedon LeDee would help the Aztecs pull one out of the fire, scoring eight of his game-high 32 points in the final 5.5 minutes.

While the Aztecs emerged with a narrow 69-65 win, they failed to cover as 6.5-point chalk. San Diego State is now a horrendous 13-20 ATS this season, a year after going 19-17-2 against the number.

San Diego State stayed at 20th in the KenPom efficiency ratings after the UAB win, boasting the 10th-best defense but just the 64th-most efficient offense.

Yale Stuns Auburn

For the second straight season, the Ivy League champion has stunned a national championship contender in the first round. The #13 Yale Bulldogs came back from a 70-60 deficit late in the second half to beat #4 Auburn 78-76. John Poulakidas scored a career-high 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting, helping the Bulldogs overcome a massive 34-20 deficit on the glass.

A triple with just over two minutes to play gave Yale a 73-72 edge – its first lead since 44-43 – and Auburn never had its nose in front thereafter.

Yale’s straight-up win as 13.5-point underdogs matched the biggest upset of the first round. The #14 Oakland Golden Grizzlies were also 13.5-point underdogs to #3 Kentucky ahead of last night’s 80-76 win in Pittsburgh.

Yale won the Ivy League title game in a similarly dramatic fashion, overcoming a five-point deficit in the last two minutes, winning on a Matt Knowling bucket as time expired.

The winner of Yale vs San Diego State will have to face the winner of #8 Northwestern vs #1 UConn in the Sweet 16 portion of the March Madness bracket.

The defending-national champion Huskies are the favorite in the March Madness championship odds and crushed the Aztecs (76-59) in last year’s title game.
