The Cleveland Cavaliers (35-6, 20-2, 28-13 ATS) bring the NBA’s best overall record and home record into their tilt with the Phoenix Suns (21-20, 8-12 away, 14-26-1 ATS) at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on Monday afternoon (3:40 pm ET). Though Evan Mobley (18.6 PPG, 8.8 RPG, 2.9 APG) is out for the Cavs, they are still big favorites in Monday’s NBA odds.

Team Spread Moneyline Total
Phoenix Suns +7.5 (-110) +240 Over 236.5 (-110)

The Cavaliers are listed as 7.5-point favorites and -305 on the moneyline, with the Suns coming back as +240 underdogs to pull of the road upset. The game total is sitting at 236.5, which is the highest total among all eight games on the NBA slate on MLK Day.

The Cavaliers will be without Evan Mobley (18.6 PPG, 8.8 RPG, 2.9 APG) and Isaac Okoro (5.8 PPG, 2.1 RPG), while the Suns are still missing Jusuf Nurkic(8.6 PPG, 9.2 RPG). Additionally, Bradley Beal (17.5 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 3.3 APG) is listed as questionable with an ankle injury that’s kept him out of Phoenix’s last two games.

The Cavaliers suffered just their second home loss of the season in their last game in Cleveland, falling 108-93 to the Pacers. They went 2-1 on their ensuing three-game road trip, beating the Pacers (127-117) in the second leg of a home-and-home along with the Timberwolves (124-117) last time out on Saturday. Those wins sandwiched an uncompetitive 134-114 loss to the West-leading Thunder, who are just half a game behind Cleveland for best record in the NBA.

Donovan Mitchell (23.1 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 4.5 APG) lit up Minnesota for 35 points but was just 12-of-27 from the field in the win.

The Suns have won two in a row and five of six to get back above .500. Last time out, they earned a 125-121 road win over the much-improved Pistons thanks to 36 points from Kevin Durant (27.4 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 4.2 APG), 35 from Devin Booker (25.8 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 6.7 APG), and a 21-point, 11-rebound performance off the bench from newly-acquired center Nick Richards (9.5 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 1.3 APG), who was playing his first game in a Phoenix uniform.

Richards, who was averaging just 21.0 MPG with the Hornets, logged 29 in the win over Detroit.

Recently-improved play notwithstanding, the Suns have been one of the most disappointing teams in the league this season. Not only are they sitting tenth in the Western Conference, tied with 11th-place Golden State, they own the second-worst ATS record in the league (14-26-1 ATS), which is only better than the 76ers (13-26-2).

NBA player props from DraftKings Sportsbook on January 20.

With Beal questionable, Phoenix’s remaining big two, Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, both have a point total of 27.5. Donovan Mitchell leads the Cavaliers players at 22.5, one more than teammate Darius Garland (21.5).

Cleveland center Jarrett Allen (14.1 PPG, 10.0 RPG) has the highest rebound total at 10.5, one higher than new Phoenix big man Nick Richards.

Booker and Darius Garland (21.2 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 6.8 APG) have the highest assist totals on the board at 6.5.

Suns vs Cavaliers Predictions

I have been predicting a Cavaliers regression for some time now, and I do believe it’s arrived. Their league-leading EFG% of 59.0 is simply unsustainable. It’s 1.2% better than any team last season, and 3.3% better than last year’s Cleveland squad.

In last week’s home loss to the Pacers, Cleveland shot just 39.8% against an Indiana defense that sits 24th in the NBA in D-Rating (117.6). The day before losing to the Pacers, Cleveland trailed the god-awful Raptors in the fourth quarter before eking out a 132-126 victory.

Phoenix actually brings a respectable defense into Monday’s game (13th in D-Rating at 113.7) and both Durant and Booker are heating up. With Richards set to flourish in a new environment, I like the Suns to keep it close in Monday’s matinee.

PHX vs CLE picks:

  • Suns +7.5 (-110) at Caesars
  • Nick Richards over 12+ points (+135) at DraftKings
