Friday night is usually hectic in the NBA, and May 7th is no exception.
10 games are on the slate, including the top teams in both conferences. With the Pelicans, Spurs, Blazers, Lakers and Heat all taking the hardwood, the play-in standings in each conference could look very different by Saturday morning.
The Sixers are heavily favored to beat the Pelicans in the opening game of the night. With no LeBron James and coming off a loss to the Clippers, the Lakers are 6.5-point underdogs for their matchup with Portland.

Odds as of May 7th
Joker Dominates Gobert Again
It’s MVP against Defensive Player of the Year on Friday. That should suggest a closely fought matchup, but recent history suggests otherwise. Rudy Gobert has had no answer for Nikola Jokic’s brilliance as a scorer and playmaker. The Joker put up 47 and 35 points in their previous regular season meetings, a carry over from last season’s playoffs.
Generally speaking, I don’t think it’s been properly understood how good Nikola Jokic will be historically by the end of his career.
After this MVP, he’ll be 26 years old with an MVP, 3 All-NBA appearances and playoff averages of 25-11-7-1 on 61% TS.

Jokic hit his stride late in that series. The seven threes in Game 5 demonstrate how he troubles Gobert, pulling him from the paint. Utah is either forced to put a smaller player on the MVP favorite or they have Gobert out on the perimeter. Dragging the Frenchman to the three-point line opens up passing lanes for Jokic and it exposes Gobert to Jokic’s off-the-bounce game.
The former second round pick is coming off three straight games with 30 or more points. There is no answer for him this season, and Gobert knows that better than anyone.
The arguments against jokic sound so much like Steph in '14 I can't help but laugh.
Just say what you really mean.. "he doesnt look the part."

Given his past performances against Utah and his video game numbers this season, it’s almost insulting to have the points and assists line at 32.5.
- Pick: Nikola Jokic over 32.5 points and assists (-122)

Matched up with Bam Adebayo, Karl-Anthony Towns could be limited as a scorer on Friday night. He’s already playmaking more than ever before in his career, and this could be a game where Chris Finch focuses in on Towns as the hub of the offense.
Timberwolves are now 10-6 when D’Angelo Russell and Karl Anthony Towns both play.

Towns is averaging 4.9 dimes per game since the All-Star break. That’s comfortably more than he’s averaged across any season in his career. The returns have fluctuated of late, with three games with three or fewer assists over his last six outings. In the other seven games over that span, though, the former first overall pick has notched at least five dimes. The 4.5 line, as such, seems low for a player of his passing ability.
The Timberwolves are a top 10 offense over the last 10 games. Only three teams have a higher assist rate. Finch has Minnesota moving the ball, and running an offense which seems to be creating an abundance of good looks.
Karl-Anthony Towns appeared in his 400th NBA game last night. Some career numbers:
✅ 22.9 PPG
✅ 11.7 RPG
✅ 609 3PMTowns is one of 141 players in NBA history with 500+ 3PM through their first 400 games. He is the only player in that group to average 20+ PPG and 10+ RPG. pic.twitter.com/JMb3TYhnV4

This is a great Heat defense. They sit sixth in defensive rating, and Bam Adebayo is one of the best individual defenders in the league. It’s not straight forward to nullify Towns, though, who could thrive as a playmaker as Miami looks to take away his scoring punch.
- Pick: Karl-Anthony Towns over 4.5 assists (+112)
