  • The Detroit Pistons are 3.5-point home favorites over the New York Knicks tonight
  • New York will be missing OG Anunoby (thumb), Josh Hart (knee) and Mitchell Robinson (load management)

A potential first round playoff matchup is on deck tonight as the Knicks (50-29, 23-16 away) visit the Pistons (43-36, 21-18 home). New York can clinch the East’s third seed with a win or a Pacers loss, and that would set up a likely matchup with Detroit who seem destined to finish sixth. Online sportsbooks are siding with the Pistons in the NBA odds, while I’m predicting this game exceeds the total. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:10pm ET at the Little Caesars Arena, in Detroit, MI.

Detroit is currently favored by 3.5-points and is -162 on the moneyline. The total sits at 228.5, with New York coming back as a +136 underdog. Per the NBA public betting trends, the over/under has risen 4 points since opening odds were released, thanks to some key absences on the Knicks side.

New York Knicks vs Detroit Pistons Picks & Predictions

  • Over 228.5 (-110) at Caesars

New York will be missing OG Anunoby, Josh Hart and Mitchell Robinson. Anunoby and Hart are two of Knicks highest rated defenders per win shares, while Robinson is Karl-Anthony Towns’ backup, and one of the team’s best rim protectors.

On the other side, Detroit big man Isaiah Stewart is questionable with a knee injury. Stewart is one of the Pistons best rim protectors and one of their top rebounders.

With key defenders out, both teams should find plenty of success offensively. My prediction is the game soars over the 228.5 point total, following the market steam.

New York’s ceiling is a top-10 NBA championship odds contender with Jalen Brunson in the lineup. Brunson sat out a month with an ankle injury, but looked like his old self on Tuesday versus the Celtics. The All-Star guard dropped 27 points and 10 assists on Boston, in an overtime defeat.

The Knicks are top-five in offensive rating, after ranking second in the first half of the season. They’ve averaged 120 points in three matchups with the Pistons, with Brunson averaging 32 points and 8 assists.

As for Detroit, I expect a big game from Cade Cunningham, who’s averaged 29 points and 8 assists against New York this season. Cunningham is top-eight in the NBA in scoring and assists, and has two 35-point games in his last three outings. He won’t have to worry about the tough defense of Anunoby or Hart, and he’ll likely have to make up for the Pistons defensive shortcomings.

Detroit ranks 18th in defensive rating over the past 10 games, allowing 117 points per outing. That’s four more points than their season long average. With Brunson back, and Towns in the midst of his best season in four years, don’t expect Detroit to turn around their defensive struggles tonight.

NBA props from DraftKings and FanDuel on April 10.

Switching over to the player props market, where I’m betting over 11.5 points for Miles McBride. With Anunoby and Hart out, we need a secondary option to pick up the slack. With those two off the floor McBride’s usage goes from 15.7% to 17.2%, while his points per 100 possessions rise from 15.9 to 20.8.
