Two struggling teams in the Eastern Conference playoff picture square off in Gotham, when the New York Knicks (42-24, 21-11 home) host the Miami Heat (29-38, 13-21 away). The Knicks have struggled since losing Jalen Brunson to an ankle injury, dropping three of five on their recent road trip, while Miami is on a post-Jimmy Butler slide, having lost seven in a row.

The Heat’s lengthy fog has them the road dogs in the NBA odds, when this one tips off from MSG in New York at 7:30 pm ET, with ESPN carrying the broadcast.

The Knicks are 7-point favorites, and a short -320 on the moneyline. Miami is a +260 underdog on the moneyline, and the total comes in at 211.5 points. The Heat and Knicks have gone over the total in both head-to-head matchups this season.

New York is going to have to find a way to adjust without Brunson, whose ankle injury will likely keep him out until April.

For Miami, veteran Alec Burks (back) is out, while Andrew Wiggins (leg) is listed as questionable. They’re already down Nikola Jovic (hand).

Without Brunson, the New York scoring load should be downloaded on Karl-Anthony Towns. He’s got the highest scoring prop of any player at 25.5 points and tops all rebounders with a total of 12.5.

Last game against Golden State, Towns went for 29 points and 12 rebounds. He’s topped his total twice in the last four games sans Brunson.

Tyler Herro has Miami’s highest scoring total at 22.5, but that’s been a tough figure to climb Over of late. He went for just eight points against Memphis, and has scored 23 points in exactly one of eight March games.

Heat vs Knicks Predictions

New York’s work this season has saved them a little grace while missing Brunson. They are comfortably in third in the East, with the fourth-place Bucks still four games behind.

But they’ve looked a lot like a band without its lead singer. While Brunson is as invaluable as other stars are to their squads, New York is starting to look downright lost without him.

Their 97-94 loss to Golden State matched their season-low in scoring, and in the last four games without Brunson, the Knicks are only averaging 109 points, a full seven points off of their regular season average.

That’s why it’s hard for me to give the Knicks that many points against anyone, even a Miami squad that has gone just 4-14 since dealing disgruntled Jimmy Butler to Golden State.

That includes their last humbling, a 125-91 loss to Memphis, the second-straight game Miami has scored just 91 points, and the seventh straight game they’ve tallied less than 110 points.

Unlike the Knicks, the Heat’s struggles are magnified in the standings, where they have gone from a solid sixth to ninth, and the Bulls closing in on them, just a game back.

YouTube video

New York has won the first two legs of this three-game regular season series, but Miami can avoid the sweep if they can put together a decent offensive showing.

The Knicks are just 3-7-0 against the spread in their last 10, and 2-3-0 ATS on their road trip.

Miami might be one of the worst cover teams as an underdog in the NBA at 13-17-1 ATS, but this situation presents an entirely different scenario.

New York might still win, but they aren’t running away from anyone.
