The Atlanta Hawks (40-42, 19-22 away, 41-41 ATS, 50-31-1 O/U) travel to Florida for a date with the Orlando Magic (41-41, 22-19 home, 40-41-1 ATS, 35-47 O/U) in the 7-vs-8 play-in game in the Eastern Conference on Tuesday night (7:40 pm ET). The winner will earn a date with the reigning-champion #2 Boston Celtics in the first round, and oddsmakers expect the Magic to hold serve at home.
The Magic are currently five-point favorites and around -200 on the moneyline in Tuesday’s NBA odds while the game total has been steadily decreasing over the last 24 hours, coming down from 219.5 to 217.0 at most books. Neither team is given any thought as a title threat, with Orlando at +10000 in the latest NBA Championship odds and Atlanta at +20000.

The Magic have had a rollercoaster of a season in which no team was more decimated by injuries. Back at the start of the season when they were mostly healthy (with the exception of Paolo Banchero), the Magic won ten straight home games to open the year, and looked like they could be a true NBA title threat once their leading scorer returned. But the injury gods had other plans, and none of Orlando’s top-four scorers wound up playing more than 60 games. That quartet – Paolo Banchero (25.9 PPG), Franz Wagner (24.2 PPG), Jalen Suggs (16.2 PPG), and Mo Wagner (12.9 PPG) – averaged just 42.3 games played this year and the shorthanded Magic went through significant slumps as a result.
Heading into the postseason, Suggs and Mo Wagner are shelved with season-ending injuries but Banchero and Franz Wagner – by far the two-most important players on the Orlando roster – are at or near full health. And the Magic won five straight games to close the year (before a meaningless matchup with Atlanta on the final day of the regular season when both teams rested their starters).
When these teams met on April 12 in Orlando, the Magic jumped out to a nine-point halftime lead and kept the Hawks at arm’s length for the entire second half. Banchero dominated with 33 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists, while Wagner added 22-6-6 while logging a heavy 40 minutes.Onyeka Okongwu had a season-high 30 points in a losing effort while Young added 28 and 10 dimes.
Atlanta won the first meeting of the season (112-106 away) on Feb. 10 but Orlando answered back just ten days later with their own road victory in ATL (114-108). Atlanta and Orlando also played on the final day of the regular season with Atlanta taking a 117-105 decision but both teams rested the vast majority of their significant players so the result means little when handicapping Tuesday’s matchup.
When their not scraping the bottom of the bench for active bodies, the Magic are a beast at home. They won all three of their home games in the 2024 postseason against Cleveland by an average margin of 19.3 PPG. It would be nice if Suggs and Mo Wagner were healthy, but head coach Jamahl Mosley is plenty used to going deep into his rotation at this point, and as long as Banchero and Franz Wagner are both in the lineup, Orlando has enough firepower and – especially – defensive acuity to take down the Hawks again.
ATL vs ORL Advanced Stats
As the analytics starkly illustrate, Tuesday’s game will be fascinating coaching battle. The Hawks want to run as much as possible and play at the third-fastest tempo in the league, while the Magic play at the slowest tempo of all 30 teams.
Orlando’s defense wound up rated second in the NBA in efficiency, trailing only the OKC Thunder.
